Extracts and cleans up GPUI's scheduler code into a new `scheduler`
crate, making it pluggable by external runtimes. This will enable
deterministic integration testing with cloud components by providing a
unified test scheduler across Zed and backend code. In Zed, it will
replace the existing GPUI scheduler for consistent async task management
across platforms.
## Changes
- **Core Implementation**: `TestScheduler` with seed-based
randomization, session tracking (`SessionId`), and foreground/background
task separation for reproducible testing.
- **Executors**: `ForegroundExecutor` (!Send, thread-local) and
`BackgroundExecutor` (Send, with blocking/timeout support) as
GPUI-compatible wrappers.
- **Clock and Timer**: Controllable `TestClock` and future-based `Timer`
for time-sensitive tests.
- **Testing APIs**: `once()`, `with_seed()`, and `many()` methods for
configurable test runs.
- **Dependencies**: Added `async-task`, `chrono`, `futures`, etc., with
updates to `Cargo.toml` and lock file.
## Benefits
- **Integration Testing**: Facilitates reliable async tests involving
cloud sessions, reducing flakiness via deterministic execution.
- **Pluggability**: Trait-based design (`Scheduler`) allows easy
integration into non-GPUI runtimes while maintaining GPUI compatibility.
- **Cleanup**: Refactors GPUI scheduler logic for clarity, correctness
(no `unwrap()`, proper error handling), and extensibility.
Follows Rust guidelines; run `./script/clippy` for verification.
- [x] Define and test a core scheduler that we think can power our cloud
code and GPUI
- [ ] Replace GPUI's scheduler

Release Notes:
- Added channel reordering for administrators (use `cmd-up` and
`cmd-down` on macOS or `ctrl-up` `ctrl-down` on Linux to move channels
up or down within their parent)
## Summary
This PR introduces the ability for channel administrators to reorder
channels within their parent context, providing better organizational
control over channel hierarchies. Users can now move channels up or down
relative to their siblings using keyboard shortcuts.
## Problem
Previously, channels were displayed in alphabetical order with no way to
customize their arrangement. This made it difficult for teams to
organize channels in a logical order that reflected their workflow or
importance, forcing users to prefix channel names with numbers or
special characters as a workaround.
## Solution
The implementation adds a persistent `channel_order` field to channels
that determines their display order within their parent. Channels with
the same parent are sorted by this field rather than alphabetically.
## Implementation Details
### Database Schema
Added a new column and index to support efficient ordering:
```sql
-- crates/collab/migrations/20250530175450_add_channel_order.sql
ALTER TABLE channels ADD COLUMN channel_order INTEGER NOT NULL DEFAULT 1;
CREATE INDEX CONCURRENTLY "index_channels_on_parent_path_and_order" ON "channels" ("parent_path", "channel_order");
```
### RPC Protocol
Extended the channel proto with ordering support:
```proto
// crates/proto/proto/channel.proto
message Channel {
uint64 id = 1;
string name = 2;
ChannelVisibility visibility = 3;
int32 channel_order = 4;
repeated uint64 parent_path = 5;
}
message ReorderChannel {
uint64 channel_id = 1;
enum Direction {
Up = 0;
Down = 1;
}
Direction direction = 2;
}
```
### Server-side Logic
The reordering is handled by swapping `channel_order` values between
adjacent channels:
```rust
// crates/collab/src/db/queries/channels.rs
pub async fn reorder_channel(
&self,
channel_id: ChannelId,
direction: proto::reorder_channel::Direction,
user_id: UserId,
) -> Result<Vec<Channel>> {
// Find the sibling channel to swap with
let sibling_channel = match direction {
proto::reorder_channel::Direction::Up => {
// Find channel with highest order less than current
channel::Entity::find()
.filter(
channel::Column::ParentPath
.eq(&channel.parent_path)
.and(channel::Column::ChannelOrder.lt(channel.channel_order)),
)
.order_by_desc(channel::Column::ChannelOrder)
.one(&*tx)
.await?
}
// Similar logic for Down...
};
// Swap the channel_order values
let temp_order = channel.channel_order;
channel.channel_order = sibling_channel.channel_order;
sibling_channel.channel_order = temp_order;
}
```
### Client-side Sorting
Optimized the sorting algorithm to avoid O(n²) complexity:
```rust
// crates/collab/src/db/queries/channels.rs
// Pre-compute sort keys for efficient O(n log n) sorting
let mut channels_with_keys: Vec<(Vec<i32>, Channel)> = channels
.into_iter()
.map(|channel| {
let mut sort_key = Vec::with_capacity(channel.parent_path.len() + 1);
// Build sort key from parent path orders
for parent_id in &channel.parent_path {
sort_key.push(channel_order_map.get(parent_id).copied().unwrap_or(i32::MAX));
}
sort_key.push(channel.channel_order);
(sort_key, channel)
})
.collect();
channels_with_keys.sort_by(|a, b| a.0.cmp(&b.0));
```
### User Interface
Added keyboard shortcuts and proper context handling:
```json
// assets/keymaps/default-macos.json
{
"context": "CollabPanel && not_editing",
"bindings": {
"cmd-up": "collab_panel::MoveChannelUp",
"cmd-down": "collab_panel::MoveChannelDown"
}
}
```
The CollabPanel now properly sets context to distinguish between editing
and navigation modes:
```rust
// crates/collab_ui/src/collab_panel.rs
fn dispatch_context(&self, window: &Window, cx: &Context<Self>) -> KeyContext {
let mut dispatch_context = KeyContext::new_with_defaults();
dispatch_context.add("CollabPanel");
dispatch_context.add("menu");
let identifier = if self.channel_name_editor.focus_handle(cx).is_focused(window) {
"editing"
} else {
"not_editing"
};
dispatch_context.add(identifier);
dispatch_context
}
```
## Testing
Comprehensive tests were added to verify:
- Basic reordering functionality (up/down movement)
- Boundary conditions (first/last channels)
- Permission checks (non-admins cannot reorder)
- Ordering persistence across server restarts
- Correct broadcasting of changes to channel members
## Migration Strategy
Existing channels are assigned initial `channel_order` values based on
their current alphabetical sorting to maintain the familiar order users
expect:
```sql
UPDATE channels
SET channel_order = (
SELECT ROW_NUMBER() OVER (
PARTITION BY parent_path
ORDER BY name, id
)
FROM channels c2
WHERE c2.id = channels.id
);
```
## Future Enhancements
While this PR provides basic reordering functionality, potential future
improvements could include:
- Drag-and-drop reordering in the UI
- Bulk reordering operations
- Custom sorting strategies (by activity, creation date, etc.)
## Checklist

You can set `agent_font_size` as a top-level settings key. You can also
use `zed::IncreaseBufferFontSize` and `zed::DecreaseBufferFontSize` and
`zed::ResetBufferFontSize` the agent panel is focused via the standard

sense to rename these actions to be more general since "buffer" is now a
bit of a misnomer. 🍐'd with @mikayla-maki

This PR renames the `regex_search` tool to `grep` because I think it
conveys more meaning to the model, the idea of searching the filesystem
with a regular expression. It's also one word and the model seems to be
using it effectively after some additional prompt tuning.
It also takes an include pattern to filter on the specific files we try
to search. I'd like to encourage the model to scope its searches more
aggressively, as in my testing, I'm only seeing it filter on file
extension.
Release Notes:

Previously, we were including the dummy text "Here are the tool
results." whenever reporting tool call results. I'm worried this is
adding noise and confusing the model, because the user didn't actually
say anything. This inserts an empty message to be populated later. My
preference would be something less stateful, where tool results (or
batches of them requested simultaneously) would be sent to the model as
soon as they were ready, without bothering to do this message
association dance. But for now, this seems to work.
Release Notes:

Now that we've established a proper eval in tree, this PR is reboots of
our agent loop back to a set of minimal tools and simpler prompts. We
should aim to get this branch feeling subjectively competitive with
what's on main and then merge it, and build from there.
Let's invest in our eval and use it to drive better performance of the
agent loop. How you can help: Pick an example, and then make the outcome
faster or better. It's fine to even use your own subjective judgment, as
our evaluation criteria likely need tuning as well at this point. Focus
on making the agent work better in your own subjective experience first.
Let's focus on simple/practical improvements to make this thing work
better, then determine how we can craft our judgment criteria to lock
those improvements in.

cc @as-cii: I'm realizing that the approach to searching for the

There's still a bit more work to do on this, but this PR is compiling
(with warnings) after eliminating the key types. When the tasks below
are complete, this will be the new narrative for GPUI:
- `Entity<T>` - This replaces `View<T>`/`Model<T>`. It represents a unit
of state, and if `T` implements `Render`, then `Entity<T>` implements

- `&mut App` This replaces `AppContext` and represents the app.
- `&mut Context<T>` This replaces `ModelContext` and derefs to `App`. It
is provided by the framework when updating an entity.
- `&mut Window` Broken out of `&mut WindowContext` which no longer
exists. Every method that once took `&mut WindowContext` now takes `&mut
Window, &mut App` and every method that took `&mut ViewContext<T>` now
takes `&mut Window, &mut Context<T>`

Previously, each window stored its own collection of focus handles. This
meant that to create a focus handle, you needed to have access to a
Window. I'm working on a simplification to gpui's context types that
removes `WindowContext` and `ViewContext` in favor of passing a window
reference explicitly when rendering or handling events. You'll still
need a window to manipulate focus, but it will be helpful to be able to
create focus handles without a window.

I think Amplitude's API is probably a pretty good example to follow for
the raw event schema, even if we don't end up using their product. They
also recommend a "Noun Verbed" format for naming events, so I think we

Release Notes:
- Returned to our previous prompt for inline assist transformations,
since recent changes were introducing issues.
I focused on cases where we're inserting doc comments or annotations
above symbols.
I added 5 new examples to the content generation prompt, covering
various scenarios:
1. Inserting documentation for a Rust struct
2. Writing docstrings for a Python class
3. Adding comments to a TypeScript method
4. Adding a derive attribute to a Rust struct
5. Adding a decorator to a Python class
These examples demonstrate how to handle different languages and common
tasks like adding documentation, attributes, and decorators.
To improve context integration, I've made the following changes:
1. Added a `transform_context_range` that includes 3 lines before and
after the transform range
2. Introduced `rewrite_section_prefix` and `rewrite_section_suffix` to
provide more context around the section being rewritten
3. Updated the prompt template to include this additional context in a
separate code snippet
Release Notes:
- Reduced instances of over-generation when inserting docs or
annotations above a symbol.
Reverts zed-industries/zed#15981
Release Notes:
- Restored the behavior of `ctrl-a` until we can separate the behavior
of the command for soft wraps and leading indentation.
This PR simplifies our approach to indentation in the inline assistant
in hopes of improving our experience for Python. We tell the model to
generate the correct indentation in the prompt, and always start
generating at the start of the line. This may fall down for less capable
models, but I want to get a solid experience on the best models and then
figure the rest out later.
Also: We now prefer `./assets/prompts` as an overrides directory when
stdout is a PTY, so you can do `cargo run` and then iterate prompts for
the current run inside the current working copy.
cc @trishume @dsp-ant
Release Notes:

Python and other indentation-sensitive languages, but it does require

# HTTP Client Improvements for Extension API
This PR enhances the HTTP client functionality in the Zed extension API,
providing more control over requests and allowing for streaming
responses.
## Key Changes
1. Extended `HttpRequest` struct:
- Added `method` field to specify HTTP method
- Added `headers` field for custom headers
- Added optional `body` field for request payload
2. Introduced `HttpMethod` enum for supported HTTP methods
3. Updated `HttpResponse` struct:
- Added `headers` field to access response headers
- Changed `body` type from `String` to `Vec<u8>` for binary data support
4. Added streaming support:
- New `fetch_stream` function to get a response stream
- Introduced `HttpResponseStream` resource for chunked reading
5. Updated internal implementations to support these new features
6. Modified the Gleam extension to use the new API structure
## Motivation
These changes provide extension developers with more flexibility and
control over HTTP requests. The streaming support is particularly useful
for handling large responses efficiently or ideally streaming into the
UI.
## Testing
- [x] Updated existing tests
- [ ] Added new tests for streaming functionality
## Next Steps
- Consider adding more comprehensive examples in the documentation
- Evaluate performance impact of streaming for large responses

This PR introduces a new script for iterative development of prompt
overrides in Zed.
Just `script/prompts link` and your running Zed should start using
prompts from `zed/assets/prompts`. Use `script/prompts unlink` to undo.
You can also link with `script/prompts link --worktree` to store the
prompts to a `../zed_prompts` worktree that's a sibling of your repo, in
case you don't want to mess with your working copy. Just don't forget
about it!
Key changes:
- Add new `script/prompts` for managing prompt overrides
- Rename `prompt_templates_dir` to `prompt_overrides_dir` for clarity
- Update paths to use `~/.config/zed/prompt_overrides` instead of
`~/.config/zed/prompts/templates`
- Adjust `PromptBuilder` to use the new `prompt_overrides_dir` function
These changes simplify the process of customizing prompts and provide a
more intuitive naming convention for override-related functionality.

This PR opens workflow step editors as preview tabs and closes them upon
exiting the step if they are still in preview mode and they weren't
already open before entering the step.
Making this work was tricky, because we often edit the buffer as part of
displaying the workflow step suggestions to create empty lines where we
can generate. We undo these edits if the transformation is not applied,
but they were causing the preview to be dismissed.
After trying a few approaches, I decided to give workspace `Item`s a
`preserve_preview` method that defaults to false. When the workspace
sees an edit event for the item, it checks if the item wants to preserve
its preview. For buffers, after editing, you can call `refresh_preview`,
which sets a preview version to the current version of the buffer. Any
edits after this version will cause preview to not be preserved.
One final issue is with async auto-indent. To ensure these async edits
don't dismiss the preview, I automatically refresh the preview version
if preview was preserved prior to performing the auto-indent. The
assumption is that these are edits created by other edits, and if we
didn't want to dismiss the preview with the originating edits, then the
auto-indent edits shouldn't dismiss it either.

After the changes in #15536, block decorations need to be given an
explicit height if their content doesn't consume height on its own. We
missed that inline transformation deletion decorations didn't do this,
creating weird results. This fixes the issue and prevents block
decorations from ever having a zero height. That helps avoid major
weirdness, but this still a bit of a gotcha.

@JosephTLyons @notpeter We probably need to hot-fix this as I'm pretty

Using the file system as a database seems like it's easy, but it's

so we have more control. We can always add an export option, but I want
the source of truth to be somewhere other than the file system.
So far, I have a PromptStore which is global to the application and can
be initialized on startup. Then there's a `PromptLibrary` which is
intended to be the root of a new kind of Zed window. I haven't actually

of the element id stack with element state access. This was more
acceptable when element state was the only place we used global element
ids, but now that we're planning to use them more places, it makes sense
to deal with element identity as a first-class part of the element
system. We now ensure that the stack of element ids which forms the
current global element id is correctly managed in every phase of element
layout and paint and make the global id available to each element
method. In a subsequent PR, we'll use the global element id as part of
implementing arbitrary selection for UI text.

This PR renames `language::Buffer::new` to `language::Buffer::local` and
simplifies its interface. Instead of taking a replica id (which should
always be 0 for the local case) and a `BufferId`, which was awkward and
verbose to construct, it simply takes text and a `cx`.
It uses the `cx` to derive a `BufferId` from the `EntityId` associated
with the `cx`, which should always be positive based on the following
analysis...
We convert the entity id to a u64 using this method on `EntityId`, which
is defined by macros in the `slotmap` crate:
```rust
pub fn as_ffi(self) -> u64 {
(u64::from(self.version.get()) << 32) | u64::from(self.idx)
}
```
If you look at the type of `version` in `KeyData`, it is non-zero:
```rust
#[derive(Clone, Copy, PartialEq, Eq, PartialOrd, Ord, Hash)]
pub struct KeyData {
idx: u32,
version: NonZeroU32,
}
```
This commit also adds `Context::reserve_model` and
`Context::insert_model` to determine a model's entity ID before it is
created, which we need in order to assign a `BufferId` in the background
when loading a buffer asynchronously.

Resurrected this from some assistant work I did in Spring of 2023.
- [x] Resurrect streaming responses
- [x] Use streaming responses to enable AI via Zed's servers by default
(but preserve API key option for now)
- [x] Simplify protobuf
- [x] Proxy to OpenAI on zed.dev
- [x] Proxy to Gemini on zed.dev
- [x] Improve UX for switching between openAI and google models
- We current disallow cycling when setting a custom model, but we need a
better solution to keep OpenAI models available while testing the google
ones
- [x] Show remaining tokens correctly for Google models
- [x] Remove semantic index
- [x] Delete `ai` crate
- [x] Cloud front so we can ban abuse
- [x] Rate-limiting
- [x] Fix panic when using inline assistant
- [x] Double check the upgraded `AssistantSettings` are
backwards-compatible
- [x] Add hosted LLM interaction behind a `language-models` feature
flag.
Release Notes:
- We are temporarily removing the semantic index in order to redesign it
from scratch.

This practice makes it difficult to locate todo!s in my code when I'm
working. Let's take out the bang if we want to keep doing this.

I don't want to clutter this post with the asset source, so I made it
optional. I'm also checking in an example which helps me ensure my code
examples are valid.

Ensure we `panic()` instead of crash on graphics memory buffer overflow
Also bump the buffer size to 32Mb from 8Mb to make this rarer (but still
possible)
Release Notes: Fixes some crahes due to lack of graphics buffer spacae
Since the message headers are buttons, we need to shift them relatively to
compensate for the fact that the background is only visible when hovered.
I'm ok with the background not being aligned so long as the unhovered text is.
- Returning `IntoElement` because it's more universal than `Element` and
allows us to easily return components.
- Using `impl IntoElement` in `RenderOnce` for consistency, which
requires `Component` to allocate an `AnyElement`. We use a bump
allocated arena anyway for these, and my benchmark doesn't show an
impact.

In this histogram, frames-0 is this PR, frames-1 is main.

Previously, we changed borders to be drawn after content, so they are no
longer part of the same quads as the background. In our change, we gave
the background quad a transparent black border and the border quads
transparent black backgrounds. However, this caused the other channels
to blend toward that black color before becoming fully transparent,
causing them to become darker.
In this PR, I source the "placeholder" color by duplicating the values
for the other channels and only adjust the alpha down to zero.

This makes it a bit more approachable to implement.
This required converting the state of Component to AnyElement, which
costs an allocation. I'm hoping this will be ok performance-wise now
that AnyElements use bump allocation, but I need to benchmark still.
