The Tab Switcher implementation (#7653):
- `ctrl-tab` opens the Tab Switcher and moves selection to the
previously selcted tab. It also cycles selection forward.
- `ctrl-shift-tab` opens the Tab Switcher and moves selection to the
last tab in the list. It also cycles selection backward.
- Tab is selected and the Tab Switcher is closed on the shortcut
modifier key (`ctrl` by default) release.
- List items are in reverse activation history order.
- The list reacts to the item changes in background (new tab, tab
closed, tab title changed etc.)
Intentionally not in scope of this PR:
- File icons
- Close buttons
I will come back to these features. I think they need to be implemented
in separate PRs, and be synchronized with changes in how tabs are
rendered, to reuse the code as it's done in the current implementation.
The Tab Switcher looks usable even without them.
Known Issues:
Tab Switcher doesn't react to mouse click on a list item. It's not a tab
switcher specific problem, it looks like ctrl-clicks are not handled the
same way in Zed as cmd-clicks. For instance, menu items can be activated
with cmd-click, but don't react to ctrl-click. Since the Tab Switcher's
default keybinding is `ctrl-tab`, the user can only click an item with
`ctrl` pushed down, thus preventing `on_click()` from firing.
fixes#7653, #7321
Release Notes:
- Added Tab Switcher which is accessible via `ctrl-tab` and
`ctrl-shift-tab` (#7653) (#7321)

How it looks and works (it's only `ctrl-tab`'s and `ctrl-shift-tab`'s,
no `enter`'s or mouse clicks):

This PR adds support for handling action releases — events that
are fired when the user releases all the modifier keys that were part of
an action-triggering shortcut.
If the user holds modifiers and invokes several actions sequentially via
shortcuts (same or different), only the last action is "released" when
its modifier keys released.
~The following methods were added to `Div`:~
- ~`capture_action_release()`~
- ~`on_action_release()`~
- ~`on_boxed_action_release()`~
~They work similarly to `capture_action()`, `on_action()` and
`on_boxed_action()`.~
See the implementation details in [this
comment](https://github.com/zed-industries/zed/pull/8782#issuecomment-2009154646).

This PR fixes file name coloring in the project panel and tabs when
.gitignore file is updated. It's intended to fix#7831.
There's another, less vivid, problem with git-aware labels coloring.
It's about files that are both ignored and contained in the git index.
I'll file a separate issue for it to keep this fix focused.
Release Notes:
- Fixed file Git status refreshing on .gitignore update (#7831).
At the moment, `Picker` always has an editor at the top, that allows the
user to search list elements by text. Sometimes, the UI doesn't need
such an editor. Like in the [tab
switcher](https://github.com/zed-industries/zed/issues/7653) that will
confirm selection on the modifier keys release, so there will be no
searching capabilities.
This PR adds support for a "headless picker" that doesn't display an
editor. It only has an invisible element to hold input focus for
preventing it from jumping back to the workspace.
At the moment, none of the picker implementations is made headless. It's
for the future implementations. But I'd like to make it a separate PR to
keep it focused on this particular feature.

Several improvements in how various markers are displayed in the editor
scrollbar, as described in #9070, if you're ok with the proposal:
- Scrollbar has three columns:
- 1st is for git markers
- 2nd is for selections and search resulta highlightings
- 3rd is for diagnostics
- Height of all markers is scaled, but there's a minimal allowed height
of 2px.
- Right border removed from both the scrollbar and thumb to make more
room for markers.
Release Notes:
- Improved scrollbar markers visualization (#9070).
Project panel loses the last scrolling position every time the user
hides/shows it. This PR fixes the problem.
The reason of the problem is that `UniformListScrollHandle`, which is
intended to store the scrolling position between redrawings, is only
used for ad-hoc autoscrollings to the list items, while the
`interactivity.scroll_handle` that is responsible for the scrolling
position, doesn't survive the project panel hiding.
How the problem looks:

Release Notes:
- Fixed scrolling position restoration in the Project Panel.
The project panel now both observes all the project updates and
subscribes to project events it's interested in. The observing handler
updates the list of visible entries on any notification, which looks
pretty excessive.
This PR removes the observer completely, and adds missing event handlers
to the subscription, thus removing unnecessary work.

This PR adds settings for hiding title (breadcrumbs) from the terminal
toolbar. If the title is hidden, the toolbar disappears completely.
Example:
```json
"terminal": {
"toolbar": {
"title": true,
}
}
```
[The PR that added the "toolbar"
setting](https://github.com/zed-industries/zed/pull/7338) didn't affect
toolbars of the terminals that are placed in the editor pane. This PR
fixes that.
Release Notes:
- Added support for configuring the terminal toolbar ([8125](https://github.com/zed-industries/zed/issues/8125))
Fixes#7519
Optimizes file finder subscriptions — it now only subscribes to
worktrees updates instead of all project updates.
Project panel could also be optimized this way, I guess.
Release Notes:
- Fix selection resets in the file finder during language server
startup ([7519](https://github.com/zed-industries/zed/issues/7519))
Fixes a bug in the buffer search bar: Clears results of a previous
successfull search when the user enters invalid search request.
Steps to reproduce the bug:
1. Switch to Regex search mode.
2. Enter a valid search query that produces several matches.
3. Add a symbol to the search query that makes it an invalid regexp.
4. Switch to the editor and walk through the code back and forth.
Expected result: All the match highlightings after step 2 are cleared,
search bar indicates absence of the last search matches.
Actual: The results from the last valid search are highlighted, search
bar indicates presence of matches.
Potentially, the same effect may occur when searching in the simple text
mode, or when clearing the search query in some circumstances, so I made
the fix for all those cases, though I wasn't able to reproduce them
manually.

Release Notes:
- Clear search results on invalid query input
This PR fixes the issue with invalid regexp highlighting (red border)
when switching to the simple text searching mode (#7658).
Implementation details:
- `update_matches()` always relied on the caller to reset the
`query_contains_error` flag, which wasn't always the case. Now, it
resets the flag itself.
Release Notes:
- Fix issue with switching between invalid regexp and simple text buffer
search (#7658).

This PR introduces several enhancements (along with fixing a couple of
bugs) in the search bar UI (copied from [this
comment](https://github.com/zed-industries/zed/issues/7663#issuecomment-1937659091)):
- Moving the Replace field under the Search field makes it easier to
compare texts and avoid typos. Also, less eyes movements.
- Use red (error) color to indicate that nothing matched. VSCode, IDEA
do this. Again, it helps to get a quicker feedback on typos without
moving your eyes.
- Much less moving parts and no place for flickering.
- Better fits to narrow panes.
- The Close button that allows to close the search bar with the mouse.
- Better keyboard handling (tab, shift+tab in the replacement mode),
autofocus on the Replace field.
How it looks:
https://github.com/zed-industries/zed/assets/2101250/93b0edb4-4311-4a7f-9f43-b30c4d1aede5
Implementation details:
- Using `Self::on_query_editor_event` looked suspicious
[here](https://github.com/zed-industries/zed/blob/288013503755f0d44feff6a517169a2861b43f26/crates/search/src/buffer_search.rs#L491)
because it triggered searching on the replacement text changes. I've
created a separate method for the replacement editor.
- These changes don't affect the project search bar. If the PR is
accepted, the same changes may be implemented there.
Fixed issues:
- #7661
- #7663
Release Notes:
- Buffer search bar UI enhancements.
File finder looks and feels a little bulky now. It duplicates file names
and consumes too much space for each file.
This PR makes it more compact:
- File name is trimmed from the path, removing duplication
- Path is placed to the right of the file name, improving space usage
- Path is muted and printed in small size to not distract attention from
the main information (file names)
It makes search results easier to look through, consistent with the
editor tabs, and closer in terms of usage to mature editors.
Release Notes:
- File finder UI enhancement
Adds settings for hiding breadcrumbs and quick action bar from
the editor toolbar. If both elements are hidden, the toolbar disappears
completely.
Example:
```json
"toolbar": {
"breadcrumbs": true,
"quick_actions": false
}
```
- It intentionally doesn't hide breadcrumbs in other views (for
instance, in the search result window) because their usage there differ
from the main editor.
- The editor controls how breadcrumbs are displayed in the toolbar, so
implementation differs a bit for breadcrumbs and quick actions bar.
Release Notes:
- Added support for configuring the editor toolbar ([4756](https://github.com/zed-industries/zed/issues/4756))
This PR completes the first task of the Tabless editing feature (#6424).
It makes file finder select the previously opened file by default which
allows the user to quickly switch between two last opened files by
clicking `Cmd-P + Enter`.
This feature was also requested in #4663 comments.
Release Notes:
* Improved file finder selection: currently opened item is not selected now
