Lukas Wirth c98b2d6944 multi_buffer: Typed MultiBufferOffset (#42707)
This PR introduces a new `MultiBufferOffset` new type wrapping size. The
goal of this is to make it clear at the type level when we are
interacting with offsets of a multi buffer versus offsets of a language
/ text buffer. This improves readability of things quite a bit by making
it clear what kind of offsets one is working with while also reducing
accidental bugs by using the wrong kin of offset for the wrong API.

This PR also uncovered two minor bugs due to that.

Does not yet introduce the MultiBufferPoint equivalent, that is for a
follow up PR.

Remco Smits 7e97fcaacb Reduce display_map snapshot creation (#39354)
Re-applies https://github.com/zed-industries/zed/pull/30840

This PR re-applies the initial
[PR](https://github.com/zed-industries/zed/pull/30840). As it was closed
because it was hard to land, because of the many conflicts. This PR
re-applies the changes for it.

In several cases we were creating multiple display_map
snapshots within the same root-level function call.
Creating a display_map snapshot is quite slow, and in some
cases we were creating the snapshot multiple times.

DinoandConrad Irwin 3d4f488d46 vim: Update change surrounds to match vim's behavior (#38721)
These changes refactor the whitespace handling logic for Vim's change
surrounds command (`cs`), making its behavior closely match
[tpope/vim-surround](https://github.com/tpope/vim-surround), following
[this
discussion](https://github.com/zed-industries/zed/issues/38169#issuecomment-3304129461).

Zed's current implementation has two main differences when compared to
[tpope/vim-surround](https://github.com/tpope/vim-surround):

- It only considers whether a single space should be added or removed,
instead of all the space that is between the surrounding character and
the content
- It only takes into consideration the new surrounding characters in
order to determine whether to add or remove that space

A review of
[tpope/vim-surround](https://github.com/tpope/vim-surround)'s behavior
reveals these rules for whitespace:

* Quote to Quote
    * Whitespace is never changed
* Quote to Bracket
    * If opening bracket, add one space
    * If closing bracket, do not add space
* Bracket to Bracket
    * If opening to opening, keep only one space
    * If opening to closing, remove all space
    * If closing to opening, add one space
    * If closing to closing, do not change space
* Bracket to Quote
    * If opening, remove all space
    * If closing, preserve all space

Below is a table with examples for each scenario. A new test has also
been added to specifically check the scenarios outlined above,
`vim::surrounds::test::test_change_surrounds_vim`.

| Type              | Before      | Command | After         |
|-------------------|-------------|---------|---------------|
| Quote → Quote     | `'   a   '` | `cs'"`  | `"   a   "`   |
| Quote → Quote     | `"   a   "` | `cs"'`  | `'   a   '`   |
| Quote → Bracket   | `'   a   '` | `cs'{`  | `{    a    }` |
| Quote → Bracket   | `'   a   '` | `cs'}`  | `{   a   }`   |
| Bracket → Bracket | `[   a   ]` | `cs[{`  | `{ a }`       |
| Bracket → Bracket | `[   a   ]` | `cs[}`  | `{a}`         |
| Bracket → Bracket | `[   a   ]` | `cs]{`  | `{    a    }` |
| Bracket → Bracket | `[   a   ]` | `cs]}`  | `{   a   }`   |
| Bracket → Quote   | `[   a   ]` | `cs['`  | `'a'`         |
| Bracket → Quote   | `[   a   ]` | `cs]'`  | `'   a   '`   |

These changes diverge from
[tpope/vim-surround](https://github.com/tpope/vim-surround) when
handling newlines. For example, with the following snippet:

```rust
fn test_surround() {
    if 2 > 1 {
        println!("place cursor here");
    }
};
```

Placing the cursor inside the string and running any combination of
‎`cs{[`, ‎`cs{]`, ‎`cs}[`, or ‎`cs}]` would previously remove newline
characters. With these changes, using commands like ‎`cs}]` will now
preserve newlines.

Dino 4743fe8415 vim: Fix regression in surround behavior (#38344)
Fix an issue introduced in
https://github.com/zed-industries/zed/pull/37321 where vim's surround

Dino e5a968b709 vim: Fix change surround with any brackets text object (#37386)
This commit fixes an issue with how the `AnyBrackets` object was handled
with change surrounds (`cs`). With the keymap below, if one was to use
`csb{` with the text `(bracketed)` and the cursor inside the
parentheses, the text would not change.

```json
{
  "context": "vim_operator == a || vim_operator == i || vim_operator == cs",
  "bindings": {
    "b": "vim::AnyBrackets"
  }
}
```

Unfortunately there was no implementation for finding a corresponding
`BracketPair` for the `AnyBrackets` object, meaning that, when using
`cs` (change surrounds) the code would simply do nothing.

This commit updates this logic so as to try and find the nearest
surrounding bracket (parentheses, curly brackets, square brackets or
angle brackets), ensuring that `cs` also works with `AnyBrackets`.

Dino c894351544 vim: Fix change surrounding quotes with whitespace within (#37321)
This commit fixes a bug with Zed's vim mode surrounds plugin when
dealing with replacing pairs with quote and the contents between the
pairs had some whitespace within them.

For example, with the following string:

```
' str '
```

If one was to use the `cs'"` command, to replace single quotes with
double quotes, the result would actually be:

```
"str"
```

As the whitespace before and after the closing character was removed.

This happens because of the way the plugin decides whether to add or
remove whitespace after and before the opening and closing characters,
repsectively. For example, using `cs{[` yields a different result from
using `cs{]`, the former adds a space while the latter does not.

However, since for quotes the opening and closing character is exactly
the same, this behavior is not possible, so this commit updates the code
in `vim::surrounds::Vim.change_surrounds` so that it never adds or
removes whitespace when dealing with any type of quotes.

6fca1d2b0b Eliminate GPUI View, ViewContext, and WindowContext types (#22632)
There's still a bit more work to do on this, but this PR is compiling
(with warnings) after eliminating the key types. When the tasks below
are complete, this will be the new narrative for GPUI:

- `Entity<T>` - This replaces `View<T>`/`Model<T>`. It represents a unit
of state, and if `T` implements `Render`, then `Entity<T>` implements
`Element`.
- `&mut App` This replaces `AppContext` and represents the app.
- `&mut Context<T>` This replaces `ModelContext` and derefs to `App`. It
is provided by the framework when updating an entity.
- `&mut Window` Broken out of `&mut WindowContext` which no longer
exists. Every method that once took `&mut WindowContext` now takes `&mut
Window, &mut App` and every method that took `&mut ViewContext<T>` now
takes `&mut Window, &mut Context<T>`

Not pictured here are the two other failed attempts. It's been quite a
month!

Tasks:

- [x] Remove `View`, `ViewContext`, `WindowContext` and thread through
`Window`
- [x] [@cole-miller @mikayla-maki] Redraw window when entities change
- [x] [@cole-miller @mikayla-maki] Get examples and Zed running
- [x] [@cole-miller @mikayla-maki] Fix Zed rendering
- [x] [@mikayla-maki] Fix todo! macros and comments
- [x] Fix a bug where the editor would not be redrawn because of view

- [x] remove publicness window.notify() and replace with

- [x] remove `observe_new_window_models`, replace with

- [x] Fix a bug where the project panel would not be redrawn because of
the wrong refresh() call being used
- [x] Fix the tests
- [x] Fix warnings by eliminating `Window` params or using `_`
- [x] Fix conflicts

more than one unit. For example, "10 ctrl-w -" will decrease the height
of the pane 10 times more than "ctrl-w -"
- This pr does **not** add keybinds for making all panes in an axis
equal size and does **not** add support for resizing docks. This is

- Adds a new `surround_alias` function where aliases are defined.
- This function is used in `find_surround_pairs` to substitute the

- The keymap is also modified to add support for Square and Angle
brackets when changing surrounds. These two were added to follow the
example of Tim Pope's ubiquitous `vim-surround` plugin.
- I had to overwrite the `vim::Argument` keybind in order to do this. I
moved it to use the `g` modifier. I realize this is a breaking change
and will happily move the `vim::AngleBracket` keymap to a different
letter if you'd like to avoid this. I'm just trying to keep with
convention. Ideally, Users would be able to define surround aliases
themselves in the config file but that's a much bigger task than I'm
able to do right now.
- I also added tests for the new aliases.

Thanks for making such a clean and organized codebase. I was able to
find the relevant section of code rather quickly thanks to this.

Conrad Irwin 36d51fe4a5 vim: Improve lifecycle (#16477)
Closes #13579

A major painpoint in the Vim crate has been life-cycle management. We
used to have one global Vim instance that tried to track per-editor
state; this led to a number of subtle issues (e.g. #13579, the mode
indicator being global, and quick toggling between windows letting vim
mode's notion of the active editor get out of sync).

This PR changes the internal structure of the code so that there is now
one `Vim` instance per `Editor` (stored as an `Addon`); and the global
stuff is separated out. This fixes the above problems, and tidies up a
bunch of the mess in the codebase.

Benjamin Davies 77b2da2b42 vim: Surround in visual mode (#13347)
Adds support for surrounding text in visual/visual-line/visual-block
mode by re-using the `AddSurrounds` operator. There is no default
binding though so the user must follow the instructions to enable it.

Note that the behaviour varies slightly for the visual-line and
visual-block modes. In visual-line mode the surrounds are placed on
separate lines (the vim-surround extension also indents the contents but
I opted not to as that behaviour is less important with the use of code
formatters). In visual-block mode each of the selected regions is
surrounded and the cursor returns to the beginning of the selection
after the action is complete.

ᴀᴍᴛᴏᴀᴇʀ 95b06097ee Add support for auto surround (#13217)
![result](https://github.com/zed-industries/zed/assets/32017007/c400081f-be5d-48fa-994f-90a00e2be359)

In the past, Zed used a single switch called `autoclose` to control both
`autoclose` and `auto_surround` functionalities:
+ `autoclose`: when input '(', append ')' automatically.
+ `auto_surround`: when select text and input '(', surround text with
'(' and ')' automatically.

This PR separates `auto_surround` from `autoclose` to support `<`.

Previously, if `autoclose` of `<` was set to `false`, `auto_surround`
couldn't be used. However, setting `autoclose` to `true` would affect
the default behavior of simple expression. For example, `a < b` would
become `a <> b`.

For more information, see #13187.

HansandConrad Irwin 44aed4a0cb Add surrounds support for vim (#9400)
For #4965

There are still some minor issues:
1. When change the surround and delete the surround, we should also
decide whether there are spaces inside after deleting/replacing
according to whether it is open parentheses, and replace them
accordingly, but at present, delete and change, haven't done this
adaptation for current pr, I'm not sure if I can fit it in the back or
if it needs to be fitted together.
2. In the selection mode, pressing s plus brackets should also trigger
the Add Surrounds function, but this MR has not adapted the selection
mode for the time being, I think we need to support different add
behaviors for the three selection modes.(Currently in select mode, s is
used for Substitute)
3. For the current change surrounds, if the user does not find the
bracket that needs to be matched after entering cs, but it is a valid
bracket, and will wait for the second input before failing, the better
practice here should be to return to normal mode if the first bracket is
not found
4. I reused BracketPair in language, but two of its properties weren't
used in this mr, so I'm not sure if I should create a new struct with
only start and end, which would have less code

I'm not sure which ones need to be changed in the first issue, and which
ones can be revised in the future, and it seems that they can be solved
