Lukas Wirth c98b2d6944 multi_buffer: Typed MultiBufferOffset (#42707)
This PR introduces a new `MultiBufferOffset` new type wrapping size. The
goal of this is to make it clear at the type level when we are
interacting with offsets of a multi buffer versus offsets of a language
/ text buffer. This improves readability of things quite a bit by making
it clear what kind of offsets one is working with while also reducing
accidental bugs by using the wrong kin of offset for the wrong API.

This PR also uncovered two minor bugs due to that.

Does not yet introduce the MultiBufferPoint equivalent, that is for a
follow up PR.

Michael Sloan d92d52b508 Attempt to log error instead of crash in bracket highlighting (#32837)
Crashes look like:

```
Panic `offset 632 is greater than the snapshot.len() 631` on thread 0 (com.apple.main-thread)
<multi_buffer::MultiBufferSnapshot>::innermost_enclosing_bracket_ranges::<usize>
editor::highlight_matching_bracket::refresh_matching_bracket_highlights
<gpui::app::App>::update_window_id::<bool, <gpui::app::context::Context<editor::Editor>>::subscribe_in<multi_buffer::MultiBuffer, multi_buffer::Event, <editor::Editor>::on_buffer_event>::{closure#0}::{closure#0}>::{closure#0}
<gpui::app::context::Context<editor::Editor>>::subscribe_in::<multi_buffer::MultiBuffer, multi_buffer::Event, <editor::Editor>::on_buffer_event>::{closure#0}
<gpui::app::App>::flush_effects
<project::lsp_store::LocalLspStore>::format_buffer_locally::{closure#0}
<project::lsp_store::LspStore>::format::{closure#1}::{closure#0}::<i32>
```

Though `format_buffer_locally` is not always present. Both issue reports
mention usage of the agent. I suspect this is somehow a result of agent
format-on-save combined with the user's cursor being at the end of the
buffer as it's getting edited by the agent.

The offsets are always off-by-one in the error, so at first I thought
the issue was the condition `head < snapshot.buffer_snapshot.len()`
before setting `tail` to be `head + 1`, but an offset equal to len is
valid. Seems like to get a `to_offset` crash, `head` must be greater
than `len`. Which is quite weird, a selection's offset should never be
out of bounds.

Since this code is just about highlighting brackets, this PR logs an
error instead of crashing in the `head > len` case.

6fca1d2b0b Eliminate GPUI View, ViewContext, and WindowContext types (#22632)
There's still a bit more work to do on this, but this PR is compiling
(with warnings) after eliminating the key types. When the tasks below
are complete, this will be the new narrative for GPUI:

- `Entity<T>` - This replaces `View<T>`/`Model<T>`. It represents a unit
of state, and if `T` implements `Render`, then `Entity<T>` implements
`Element`.
- `&mut App` This replaces `AppContext` and represents the app.
- `&mut Context<T>` This replaces `ModelContext` and derefs to `App`. It
is provided by the framework when updating an entity.
- `&mut Window` Broken out of `&mut WindowContext` which no longer
exists. Every method that once took `&mut WindowContext` now takes `&mut
Window, &mut App` and every method that took `&mut ViewContext<T>` now
takes `&mut Window, &mut Context<T>`

Not pictured here are the two other failed attempts. It's been quite a
month!

Tasks:

- [x] Remove `View`, `ViewContext`, `WindowContext` and thread through
`Window`
- [x] [@cole-miller @mikayla-maki] Redraw window when entities change
- [x] [@cole-miller @mikayla-maki] Get examples and Zed running
- [x] [@cole-miller @mikayla-maki] Fix Zed rendering
- [x] [@mikayla-maki] Fix todo! macros and comments
- [x] Fix a bug where the editor would not be redrawn because of view
caching
- [x] remove publicness window.notify() and replace with
`AppContext::notify`
- [x] remove `observe_new_window_models`, replace with
`observe_new_models` with an optional window
- [x] Fix a bug where the project panel would not be redrawn because of
the wrong refresh() call being used
- [x] Fix the tests
- [x] Fix warnings by eliminating `Window` params or using `_`
- [x] Fix conflicts
- [x] Simplify generic code where possible
- [x] Rename types
- [ ] Update docs

thataboyandMarshall Bowers 11058765be Add ability to separately set background color for highlighted brackets (#17566)
Closes https://github.com/zed-industries/zed/issues/16380

Currently brackets are highlighted with
`editor.document_highlight.read_background`. This commit adds a separate
`editor.document_highlight.bracket_background` theme setting so bracket
highlights can be made more prominent without doing the same to other
highlights, making the display too busy.

(My own theme)

https://github.com/user-attachments/assets/29a8c05e-2f1a-4c16-9be8-a4b4cb143548

I set defaults for light and dark theme that I hope are sensible and not
too obnoxious, but noticeable so people can change it if they don't like
it.

Release Notes:

- Added `editor.document_highlight.bracket_background` field to the
theme to set background color of highlighted brackets.
- This will fall back to `editor.document_highlight.read_background`, if
not set.

ᴀᴍᴛᴏᴀᴇʀ 95b06097ee Add support for auto surround (#13217)
![result](https://github.com/zed-industries/zed/assets/32017007/c400081f-be5d-48fa-994f-90a00e2be359)

In the past, Zed used a single switch called `autoclose` to control both
`autoclose` and `auto_surround` functionalities:
+ `autoclose`: when input '(', append ')' automatically.
+ `auto_surround`: when select text and input '(', surround text with
'(' and ')' automatically.

This PR separates `auto_surround` from `autoclose` to support `<`.

Previously, if `autoclose` of `<` was set to `false`, `auto_surround`
couldn't be used. However, setting `autoclose` to `true` would affect
the default behavior of simple expression. For example, `a < b` would
become `a <> b`.

For more information, see #13187.

Fix #12898.

Release Notes:

- Added support for `auto_surround`
([#12898](https://github.com/zed-industries/zed/issues/12898)).

3a0d3cee87 Compute scrollbar markers asynchronously (#10080)
Refs #9647
Fixes https://github.com/zed-industries/zed/issues/9792

This pull request moves the computation of scrollbar markers off the
main thread, to prevent them from grinding the editor to a halt when we
have a lot of them (e.g., when there are lots of search results on a
large file). With these changes we also avoid generating multiple quads
for adjacent markers, thus fixing an issue where we stop drawing other
primitives because we've drawn too many quads in the scrollbar.

Release Notes:

- Improved editor performance when displaying lots of search results,
diagnostics, or symbol highlights in the scrollbar
([#9792](https://github.com/zed-industries/zed/issues/9792)).

vultix 2e616f8388 Add new argument vim text object (#7791)
This PR adds a new `argument` vim text object, inspired by
[targets.vim](https://github.com/wellle/targets.vim).

As it's the first vim text object to use the syntax tree, it needed to
operate on the `Buffer` level, not the `MultiBuffer` level, then map the
buffer coordinates to `DisplayPoint` as necessary.

This required two main changes:
1. `innermost_enclosing_bracket_ranges` and `enclosing_bracket_ranges`
were moved into `Buffer`. The `MultiBuffer` implementations were updated
to map to/from these.
2. `MultiBuffer::excerpt_containing` was made public, returning a new
`MultiBufferExcerpt` type that contains a reference to the excerpt and
methods for mapping to/from `Buffer` and `MultiBuffer` offsets and
ranges.

Release Notes:
- Added new `argument` vim text object, inspired by
[targets.vim](https://github.com/wellle/targets.vim).

Max BrunsfeldandMarshall 6edeea7c8a Add logic for managing language and theme extensions (#7467)
This PR adds the initial support for loading extensions in Zed.

### Extensions Directory

Extensions are loaded from the extensions directory.

The extensions directory has the following structure:

```
extensions/
  installed/
    extension-a/
      grammars/
      languages/
    extension-b/
      themes/
  manifest.json
```

The `manifest.json` file is used internally by Zed to keep track of
which extensions are installed. This file should be maintained
automatically, and shouldn't require any direct interaction with it.

Extensions can provide Tree-sitter grammars, languages, and themes.
