Sean Billig be2df79d5c gpui: Handle null string pointer in window::insert_text (#12446)
`[NSString UTF8String]` sometimes returns null (it's documented as
such), and when it does, zed crashes in `window::insert_text`. I'm
running into this sometimes when using alt-d to delete forward. It
usually only happens with multiple cursors, but sometimes with a single
cursor. It *might* only happen when using the "Unicode Hex Input"
keyboard 'Input Source' (which I started using to avoid entering weird
characters in zed when using emacs meta keybindings that I haven't
defined in zed).

When using the US English input source, alt-d always results in a call
to `insert_text`. When using the Unicode Hex Input source it usually
doesn't, but when it does `text.UTF8String()` returns null. `text` isn't
null. `[text length]` returns 1. `[text characterAtIndex: 0]` seems to
always return `56797` (an undefined utf-16 codepoint).

Release Notes:

- Fixed crash on mac when deleting with alt-d

Thorsten Ball 49dffabab9 macOS: Allow creating directories in file-open panel (#12121)
I don't know whether there are any hard UI guidelines that dictate
whether this should be allowed or not, but I think it's very handy and
missed it.

I also think it makes sense to have this in a directory-centric editor
in which opening a directory creates a new window.

张小白 f7c5d70740 macOS: Support all OpenType font features (#11611)
This PR brings support for all `OpenType` font features to
`macOS(v10.10+)`. Now, both `Windows`(with #10756 ) and `macOS` support
all font features.

Due to my limited familiarity with the APIs on macOS, I believe I have
made sure to call `CFRelease` on all variables where it should be
called.

Close #11486 , and I think the official website's
[documentation](https://zed.dev/docs/configuring-zed) can be updated
after merging this PR.

> Zed supports a subset of OpenType features that can be enabled or
disabled for a given buffer or terminal font. The following OpenType
features can be enabled or disabled too: calt, case, cpsp, frac, liga,
onum, ordn, pnum, ss01, ss02, ss03, ss04, ss05, ss06, ss07, ss08, ss09,

Thorsten BallandAntonio 43d79af94a metal renderer: Increase instance buffer size dynamically (#11849)
Previously, we had an instance buffer pool that could only allocate
buffers with a fixed size (hardcoded to 2mb). This caused certain scenes
to render partially, e.g. when showing tens of thousands of glyphs on a
big screen.

With this commit, when `MetalRenderer` detects that a scene would be too
large to render using the current instance buffer size, it will:

- Clear the existing instance buffers
- Allocate new instance buffers that are twice as large
- Retry rendering the scene that failed with the newly-allocated buffers
during the same frame.

This fixes #11615.

Release Notes:

- Fixed rendering issues that could arise when having large amounts of
text displayed on a large display. Fixed by dynamically increasing the
size of the buffers used on the GPU.

![image](https://github.com/zed-industries/zed/assets/71973804/048ecf52-e277-49bb-a106-91cad226fd8a)

### Limitations

- No resizing
- Wayland only (though X11 always has window decorations)

### Technical

This PR adds three APIs to gpui.

1. `show_window_menu`: Triggers the native title bar context menu.
2. `start_system_move`: Tells the compositor to start dragging the
window.
3. `should_render_window_controls`: Whether the compositor doesn't
support server side decorations.

These APIs have only been implemented for Wayland, but they should be
portable to other platforms.

Conrad Irwin c73d6502d6 Make block_with_timeout more robust (#11670)
The previous implementation relied on a background thread to wake up the

which was prone to priority inversion under heavy load.

Thorsten Ball dbebb40956 linux: Store binary path before restart to handle deleted binary file (#11568)
This fixes restart after updates not working on Linux.

On Linux we can't reliably get the binary path after an update, because
the original binary was deleted and the path will contain ` (deleted)`.

See: https://github.com/rust-lang/rust/issues/69343

We *could* strip ` (deleted)` off, but that feels nasty. So instead we
save the original binary path, before we do the installation, then
restart.

Later on, we can also change this to be a _new_ binary path returned by
the installers, which we then have to start.

张小白 63a5f46df4 Remember window restore size (#10429)
Now, regardless of how the Zed window is closed, Zed can remember the
window's restore size.

- [x] Windows implementation
- [x] macOS implementation
- [x] Linux implementation (partial)
- [x] update SQL data base (mark column `fullscreen` as deprecated)

The current implementation on Linux is basic, and I'm not sure if it's
correct.

The variable `fullscreen` in SQL can be removed, but I'm unsure how to
do it.
edit: mark `fullscreen` as deprecated

### Case 1

When the window is closed as maximized, reopening it will open in the
maximized state, and returning from maximized state will restore the
position and size it had when it was maximized.

https://github.com/zed-industries/zed/assets/14981363/7207752e-878a-4d43-93a7-41ad1fdb3a06

### Case 2

When the window is closed as fullscreen, reopening it will open in
fullscreen mode, and toggling fullscreen will restore the position and
size it had when it entered fullscreen (note that the fullscreen
application was not recorded in the video, showing a black screen, but
it had actually entered fullscreen mode).

### What's more

- As English is not my native language, some variable and struct names
may need to be modified to match their actual meaning.
- I am not familiar with the APIs related to macOS and Linux, so
implementation for these two platforms has not been done for now.
- Any suggestions and ideas are welcome.

Matthias Grandl 4024b9ac4d gpui: Fix start_display_link leading to resource leak on hidden windows (#11289)
Release Notes:

- N/A

While developing [Loungy](https://loungy.app), I noticed that everytime
I wake my laptop, Loungy starts consuming 100% CPU. I traced it down to
`start_display_link` as there was this error message at the time of wake
up:

```
[2024-05-02T05:02:31Z ERROR util] /Users/matthias/zed/crates/gpui/src/platform/mac/window.rs:420: could not create display link, code: -6661
```

The timeline is this:

1. The application is hidden with `cx.hide()`
2. The system is put to sleep and later woken up
3. `window_did_change_screen` would trigger immediately after wakeup,
calling `start_display_link`
4. `start_display_link` fails catastrophically as `DisplayLink::new`
starts hogging all the CPU for some reason?
5. throws the error message above
6. Once the window is opened, `window_did_change_occlusion_state` it
retriggers `start_display_link` and the CPU issue subsides

jansol 35c3af7fd0 gpui/mac: Disable shadows on non-opaque windows (#10896)
The culprit behind ghost images in transparent windows and bad
performance with blurred windows turns out to be one and the same:
window shadows. The simplest and most popular fix appears to be to
simply disable shadows on non-opaque windows so let's just do that.

Disabling shadows on a window that is already visible however leaves the
shadow on screen, detached from the window, until a full screen effect
such as exposé or a virtual desktop switch wipes it clean. There does
not seem to be any known solution to this, and it does not affect
windows created after switching to a transparent theme so this is a good
enough compromise for now.

- Fixed ghostly artifacts in transparent window backgrounds.
- Fixed sluggishness with blurred window backgrounds.

Piotr Osiewicz 4fb9f41e69 gpui/metal: Clamp max texture width/height to 16kB (#10314)
Fixed #10149
A user had Zed crash due to invalid font size in settings. It turned out
the width/height of glyphs does not pass validation in Metal texture
initialization with a large enough font size.

All modern Macs have a max texture width/height of 16kB (barring Apple
A8, used by iPhone 6 back in 2014, which uses 8kB). This commit clamps
texture size at 16kB. Note that while it fixes Zed crash, using a font

Marshall Bowers 16e6f5643c Extract SemanticVersion into its own crate (#9956)
This PR extracts the `SemanticVersion` out of `util` and into its own
`SemanticVersion` crate.

This allows for making use of `SemanticVersion` without needing to pull
in some of the heavier dependencies included in the `util` crate.

As part of this the public API for `SemanticVersion` has been tidied up
a bit.

49144d94bf gpui: Add support for window transparency & blur on macOS (#9610)
This PR adds support for transparent and blurred window backgrounds on
macOS.

Release Notes:

- Added support for transparent and blurred window backgrounds on macOS
([#5040](https://github.com/zed-industries/zed/issues/5040)).
- This requires themes to specify a new `background.appearance` key
("opaque", "transparent" or "blurred") and to include an alpha value in
colors that should be transparent.

Bennet Bo FennerandConrad Irwin e272acd1bc collab ui: Fix notification windows on external monitors (#9817)
Sharing a project displays a notification (window) on every screen.
Previously there was an issue with the positioning of windows on all
screens except the primary screen.

As you can see here:

@mikayla-maki and I also decided to refactor the `WindowOptions` a bit.
Previously you could specify bounds which controlled the positioning and
size of the window in the global coordinate space, while also providing
a display id (which screen to show the window on). This can lead to
unusual behavior because you could theoretically specify a global bound
which does not even belong to the display id which was provided.

Therefore we changed the api to this:
```rust
struct WindowOptions {
    /// The bounds of the window in screen coordinates
    /// None -> inherit, Some(bounds) -> set bounds.
    pub bounds: Option<Bounds<DevicePixels>>,
    /// The display to create the window on, if this is None,
    /// the window will be created on the main display
    pub display_id: Option<DisplayId>,
}
```

This lets you specify a display id, which maps to the screen where the
window should be created and bounds relative to the upper left of the
screen.

Release Notes:

- Fixed positioning of popup windows (e.g. when sharing a project) when
using multiple external displays.
