When doing a project wide search in zed on windows for `hang`, zed
starts to freeze for a couple seconds ultimately starting to error with
`Not enough quota is available to process this command.` when
dispatching windows messages. The cause for this is that we simply
overload the windows message pump due to the sheer amount of foreground
tasks we spawn when we populate the project search.
This PR is an attempt at reducing this.
Release Notes:
- Reduced hangs and stutters in large project file searches
This happens quite often with cargo based diagnostics which may spawn
several lines (sometimes the entire screen), forcing the user to scroll
up to the start of the diagnostic just to see the hover message is not
great.
Release Notes:
- Fixed diagnostics hovers not working if the diagnostic spans out of
view
Set a TLS bit to skip invoking the crash handler when a detached thread
panics.
cc @P1n3appl3 - is this at odds with what we need the crash handler to
do?
May close#39289, cannot repro without a nightly build

This caused issues with #40172, as it made Zed execute and block on tad
few more background tasks. Parker is ~cheap to create, hence we should
be ok to just create it at the time it is needed.

The only warnings remaining are links to private modules/items, but I
lack knowledge to work out if the referenced modules/items should be
made public, or if the links should be rewritten into exposed
traits/items.
Links to associated items such as trait implementations have to be
written using full markdown format such as:
... [[ `App::update_global` ]](( BorrowAppContext::update_global ))
This is due to https://github.com/rust-lang/rust/issues/74563 which
sadly prohibits fully-qualified syntax:
... [[ `<App as BorrowAppContext>::update_global` ]]

- Adds a new smoke test for the use of the read_file tool by the agent
in an SSH project
- Fixes the SSH shutdown sequence to use a timer from the app's executor
instead of always using a real timer
- Changes the main executor loop for tests to advance the clock
automatically instead of panicking with `parked with nothing left to
run` when there is a delayed task

There's still a bit more work to do on this, but this PR is compiling
(with warnings) after eliminating the key types. When the tasks below
are complete, this will be the new narrative for GPUI:
- `Entity<T>` - This replaces `View<T>`/`Model<T>`. It represents a unit
of state, and if `T` implements `Render`, then `Entity<T>` implements
`Element`.
- `&mut App` This replaces `AppContext` and represents the app.
- `&mut Context<T>` This replaces `ModelContext` and derefs to `App`. It
is provided by the framework when updating an entity.
- `&mut Window` Broken out of `&mut WindowContext` which no longer
exists. Every method that once took `&mut WindowContext` now takes `&mut
Window, &mut App` and every method that took `&mut ViewContext<T>` now
takes `&mut Window, &mut Context<T>`
Not pictured here are the two other failed attempts. It's been quite a
month!
Tasks:
- [x] Remove `View`, `ViewContext`, `WindowContext` and thread through
`Window`
- [x] [@cole-miller @mikayla-maki] Redraw window when entities change
- [x] [@cole-miller @mikayla-maki] Get examples and Zed running
- [x] [@cole-miller @mikayla-maki] Fix Zed rendering
- [x] [@mikayla-maki] Fix todo! macros and comments
- [x] Fix a bug where the editor would not be redrawn because of view
caching
- [x] remove publicness window.notify() and replace with
`AppContext::notify`
- [x] remove `observe_new_window_models`, replace with
`observe_new_models` with an optional window
- [x] Fix a bug where the project panel would not be redrawn because of
the wrong refresh() call being used
- [x] Fix the tests
- [x] Fix warnings by eliminating `Window` params or using `_`
- [x] Fix conflicts
- [x] Simplify generic code where possible
- [x] Rename types
- [ ] Update docs
### issues post merge
- [x] Issues switching between normal and insert mode
- [x] Assistant re-rendering failure
- [x] Vim test failures
- [x] Mac build issue

## TODO
### Lifecycle
* [x] Launch kernels on demand
* [x] Wait for kernel to be started
* [x] Request Kernel info on start
* [x] Show in progress indicator
* [ ] Allow picking kernel (it defaults to first matching language name)
* [ ] Menu for interrupting and shutting down the kernel
* [ ] Drop running kernels once editor is dropped
### Media Outputs
* [x] Render text and tracebacks with ANSI color handling
* [x] Render markdown as text
* [x] Render PNG and JPEG images using an explicit height based on
line-height

* [x] Run current line
* [x] Clear previous overlapping runs
* [ ] Support running markdown code blocks
* [ ] Action to export session as notebook or output files
* [ ] Action to clear all outputs
* [ ] Delete outputs when lines are deleted
## Other missing features
The following is a list of missing functionality or expectations that
are out of scope for this PR.
### Python Environments
Detecting python environments should probably be done in a separate PR
in tandem with how they're used with LSP. Users likely want to pick an
environment for their project, whether a virtualenv, conda env, pyenv,
poetry backed virtualenv, or the system. Related issues:
* https://github.com/zed-industries/zed/issues/7646
* https://github.com/zed-industries/zed/issues/7808
* https://github.com/zed-industries/zed/issues/7296
### LSP Integration
* Submit `complete_request` messages for completions to interleave
interactive variables with LSP
* LSP for IPython semantics (`%%timeit`, `!ls`, `get_ipython`, etc.)
## Future release notes

The previous implementation relied on a background thread to wake up the
main thread,
which was prone to priority inversion under heavy load.
In a synthetic test, where we spawn 200 git processes while doing a 5ms
timeout, the old version blocked for 5-80ms, the new version blocks for
5.1-5.4ms.
Release Notes:
- Improved responsiveness of the main thread under high system load
This introduces semantic indexing in Zed based on chunking text from
files in the developer's workspace and creating vector embeddings using
an embedding model. As part of this, we've created an embeddings
provider trait that allows us to work with OpenAI, a local Ollama model,
or a Zed hosted embedding.
The semantic index is built by breaking down text for known
(programming) languages into manageable chunks that are smaller than the
max token size. Each chunk is then fed to a language model to create a
high dimensional vector which is then normalized to a unit vector to
allow fast comparison with other vectors with a simple dot product.
Alongside the vector, we store the path of the file and the range within
the document where the vector was sourced from.
Zed will soon grok contextual similarity across different text snippets,
allowing for natural language search beyond keyword matching. This is
being put together both for human-based search as well as providing
results to Large Language Models to allow them to refine how they help
developers.
Remaining todo:
* [x] Change `provider` to `model` within the zed hosted embeddings
database (as its currently a combo of the provider and the model in one
name)

This PR adds an `zed: Install Local Extension` action, which lets you
select a path to a folder containing a Zed extension, and install that .
When you select a directory, the extension will be compiled (both the
Tree-sitter grammars and the Rust code for the extension itself) and
installed as a Zed extension, using a symlink.
### Details
A few dependencies are needed to build an extension:
* The Rust `wasm32-wasi` target. This is automatically installed if
needed via `rustup`.
* A wasi-preview1 adapter WASM module, for building WASM components with
Rust. This is automatically downloaded if needed from a `wasmtime`
GitHub release
* For building Tree-sitter parsers, a distribution of `wasi-sdk`. This
is automatically downloaded if needed from a `wasi-sdk` GitHub release.
The downloaded artifacts are cached in a support directory called
`Zed/extensions/build`.
### Tasks
UX
* [x] Show local extensions in the Extensions view
* [x] Provide a button for recompiling a linked extension
* [x] Make this action discoverable by adding a button for it on the
Extensions view
* [ ] Surface errors (don't just write them to the Zed log)
Packaging
* [ ] Create a separate executable that performs the extension
compilation. We'll switch the packaging system in our
[extensions](https://github.com/zed-industries/extensions) repo to use
this binary, so that there is one canonical definition of how to
build/package an extensions.

This PR updates the tenses used by the summary line of doc comments to
match the [Rust API documentation
conventions](https://rust-lang.github.io/rfcs/1574-more-api-documentation-conventions.html#summary-sentence).
Specifically:
> The summary line should be written in third person singular present
indicative form. Basically, this means write ‘Returns’ instead of
‘Return’.
I'm sure there are plenty occurrences that I missed.
