Piotr Osiewicz 37239fd66b Use serde 1.0.221 instead of serde_derive hackery (#38137)
serde 1.0.221 introduced serde_core into the build graph, which should
render explicitly depending on serde_derive for faster build times an
obsolote method.

Besides, I'm not even sure if that worked for us. My hunch is that at
least one of our deps would have `serde` with derive feature enabled..
and then, most of the crates using `serde_derive` explicitly were also
depending on gpui, which depended on `serde`.. thus, we wouldn't have
gained anything from explicit dep on `serde_derive`

Martin Pool b9cf5886e4 Run doctests in CI and fix up existing doctests (#37851)
Follows on from
https://github.com/zed-industries/zed/pull/37716#pullrequestreview-3195695110
by @SomeoneToIgnore

After this the doctests will be run in CI to check that the examples are
still accurate.

Note that doctests aren't run by Nextest: you can run them locally with
`cargo test --doc`.

Summary:
* Run tests from CI
* Loosen an exact float comparison to match approximately (otherwise it
fails)
* Fixed one actual bug in the tests for `dilate` where the test code
assumed that `dilate` mutates `self` rather than returning a new object
* Add some `must_use` on some functions that seemed at risk of similar
bugs, following the Rust stdlib style to add it where ignoring the
result is almost certainly a bug.
* Fix some cases where the doc examples seem to have gone out of date
with the code
* Add imports to doctests that need them
* Add some dev-dependencies to make the tests build
* Fix the `key_dispatch` module docstring, which was accidentally
attached to objects within that module
* Skip some doctest examples that seem like they need an async
environment or that just looked hard to get running

AI usage: I asked Claude to do some of the repetitive tests. I checked
the output and fixed up some things that seemed to not be in the right
spirit of the test, or too longwinded.

I think we could reasonably run the tests on only Linux to save CI
CPU-seconds and latency, but I haven't done that yet, partly because of
how it's implemented in the action.

Kirill Bulatov e04473dd26 Revert "gpui: Skip test attribute expansion for rust-analyzer (#37611)" (#37705)

with `gpui::test` and when it fully loads, it starts to return
module-only tasks:

Lukas Wirth 4124bedab7 gpui: Skip test attribute expansion for rust-analyzer (#37611)
The `test` attribute doesn't really matter to rust-analyzer, so we can
make use of its cfg to have it think its just the standard test
attribute which should make rust-analyzer slightly less resource
intensive in zed. It also should prevent some IDE features from possibly
failing within tests.

Notably this has no effect outside of this repo, as the `rust-analyzer`
cfg only takes effect on workspace member crates.

Ideally we'd use the ignored proc macro config here but rust-analyzer
still doesn't have toml configs working unfortunately.

Jakub Konka 5a9e18603d gpui: Fix intra rustdoc links (#37320)
The only warnings remaining are links to private modules/items, but I
lack knowledge to work out if the referenced modules/items should be
made public, or if the links should be rewritten into exposed
traits/items.

Links to associated items such as trait implementations have to be
written using full markdown format such as:

... [[ `App::update_global` ]](( BorrowAppContext::update_global ))

This is due to https://github.com/rust-lang/rust/issues/74563 which
sadly prohibits fully-qualified syntax:

Ben Kunkle eeaadc098f Add GPU info to Sentry crashes (#36624)
Closes #ISSUE

Adds system GPU collection to crash reporting. Currently this is Linux
only.

The system GPUs are determined by reading the `/sys/class/drm` directory
structure, rather than using the exisiting `gpui::Window::gpu_specs()`
method in order to gather more information, and so that the GPU context
is not dependent on Vulkan context initialization (i.e. we still get GPU
info when Zed fails to start because Vulkan failed to initialize).

Unfortunately, the `blade` APIs do not support querying which GPU _will_
be used, so we do not know which GPU was attempted to be used when
Vulkan context initialization fails, however, when Vulkan initialization
succeeds, we send a message to the crash handler containing the result
of `gpui::Window::gpu_specs()` to include the "Active" gpu in any crash
report that may occur

6fca1d2b0b Eliminate GPUI View, ViewContext, and WindowContext types (#22632)
There's still a bit more work to do on this, but this PR is compiling
(with warnings) after eliminating the key types. When the tasks below
are complete, this will be the new narrative for GPUI:

- `Entity<T>` - This replaces `View<T>`/`Model<T>`. It represents a unit
of state, and if `T` implements `Render`, then `Entity<T>` implements
`Element`.
- `&mut App` This replaces `AppContext` and represents the app.
- `&mut Context<T>` This replaces `ModelContext` and derefs to `App`. It
is provided by the framework when updating an entity.
- `&mut Window` Broken out of `&mut WindowContext` which no longer
exists. Every method that once took `&mut WindowContext` now takes `&mut
Window, &mut App` and every method that took `&mut ViewContext<T>` now
takes `&mut Window, &mut Context<T>`

Not pictured here are the two other failed attempts. It's been quite a
month!

Tasks:

- [x] Remove `View`, `ViewContext`, `WindowContext` and thread through
`Window`
- [x] [@cole-miller @mikayla-maki] Redraw window when entities change
- [x] [@cole-miller @mikayla-maki] Get examples and Zed running

- [x] Fix the tests
- [x] Fix warnings by eliminating `Window` params or using `_`

Marshall Bowers c1e291bc96 gpui: Improve Global ergonomics (#11923)
This PR adds some ergonomic improvements when working with GPUI
`Global`s.

Two new traits have been added—`ReadGlobal` and `UpdateGlobal`—that
provide associated functions on any type that implements `Global` for
accessing and updating the global without needing to call the methods on
the `cx` directly (which generally involves qualifying the type).

I looked into adding `ObserveGlobal` as well, but this seems a bit
trickier to implement as the signatures of `cx.observe_global` vary
slightly between the different contexts.

Marshall Bowers d633a0da78 gpui: Fix Global trait (#11187)
This PR restores the `Global` trait's status as a marker trait.

This was the original intent from #7095, when it was added, that had
been lost in #9777.

The purpose of the `Global` trait is to statically convey what types can
and can't be accessed as `Global` state, as well as provide a way of
restricting access to said globals.

For example, in the case of the `ThemeRegistry` we have a private
`GlobalThemeRegistry` that is marked as `Global`:
https://github.com/zed-industries/zed/blob/91b3c24ed35d58438ae33970f07d1ff01d3acfc7/crates/theme/src/registry.rs#L25-L34

We're then able to permit reading the `ThemeRegistry` from the
`GlobalThemeRegistry` via a custom getter, while still restricting which
callers are able to mutate the global:
https://github.com/zed-industries/zed/blob/91b3c24ed35d58438ae33970f07d1ff01d3acfc7/crates/theme/src/registry.rs#L46-L61

Nathan SoboandPiotr Osiewicz 7abb63cfda Improve the ergonomics of creating local buffers (#10347)
This PR renames `language::Buffer::new` to `language::Buffer::local` and
simplifies its interface. Instead of taking a replica id (which should
always be 0 for the local case) and a `BufferId`, which was awkward and
verbose to construct, it simply takes text and a `cx`.

It uses the `cx` to derive a `BufferId` from the `EntityId` associated
with the `cx`, which should always be positive based on the following
analysis...

We convert the entity id to a u64 using this method on `EntityId`, which
is defined by macros in the `slotmap` crate:

```rust
    pub fn as_ffi(self) -> u64 {
        (u64::from(self.version.get()) << 32) | u64::from(self.idx)
    }
```

If you look at the type of `version` in `KeyData`, it is non-zero:

```rust
#[derive(Clone, Copy, PartialEq, Eq, PartialOrd, Ord, Hash)]
pub struct KeyData {
    idx: u32,
    version: NonZeroU32,
}
```

This commit also adds `Context::reserve_model` and
`Context::insert_model` to determine a model's entity ID before it is
created, which we need in order to assign a `BufferId` in the background
when loading a buffer asynchronously.

fb6cff89d7 Introduce InlineCompletionProvider (#9777)
This pull request introduces a new `InlineCompletionProvider` trait,
which enables making `Editor` copilot-agnostic and lets us push all the
copilot functionality into the `copilot_ui` module. Long-term, I would
like to merge `copilot` and `copilot_ui`, but right now `project`
depends on `copilot`, which makes this impossible.

The reason for adding this new trait is so that we can experiment with
other inline completion providers and swap them at runtime using config
settings.

Please, note also that we renamed some of the existing copilot actions
to be more agnostic (see release notes below). We still kept the old
actions bound for backwards-compatibility, but we should probably remove
them at some later version.

Also, as a drive-by, we added new methods to the `Global` trait that let
you read or mutate a global directly, e.g.:

```rs
MyGlobal::update(cx, |global, cx| {
});
```

Release Notes:

- Renamed the `copilot::Suggest` action to
`editor::ShowInlineCompletion`
- Renamed the `copilot::NextSuggestion` action to
`editor::NextInlineCompletion`
- Renamed the `copilot::PreviousSuggestion` action to
`editor::PreviousInlineCompletion`
- Renamed the `editor::AcceptPartialCopilotSuggestion` action to
`editor::AcceptPartialInlineCompletion`

### Problem

After transitioning Zed to GPUI 2, we started noticing that interacting
with the mouse on many UI elements would lead to a pretty annoying
flicker. The main issue with the old approach was that hover state was
calculated based on the previous frame. That is, when computing whether
a given element was hovered in the current frame, we would use
information about the same element in the previous frame.

However, inspecting the previous frame tells us very little about what
should be hovered in the current frame, as elements in the current frame
may have changed significantly.

### Solution

This pull request's main contribution is the introduction of a new
`after_layout` phase when redrawing the window. The key idea is that
we'll give every element a chance to register a hitbox (see
`ElementContext::insert_hitbox`) before painting anything. Then, during
the `paint` phase, elements can determine whether they're the topmost
and draw their hover state accordingly.

We are also removing the ability to give an arbitrary z-index to
elements. Instead, we will follow the much simpler painter's algorithm.
That is, an element that gets painted after will be drawn on top of an
element that got painted earlier. Elements can still escape their
current "stacking context" by using the new `ElementContext::defer_draw`
method (see `Overlay` for an example). Elements drawn using this method
will still be logically considered as being children of their original
parent (for keybinding, focus and cache invalidation purposes) but their
layout and paint passes will be deferred until the currently-drawn
element is done.

With these changes we also reworked geometry batching within the
`Scene`. The new approach uses an AABB tree to determine geometry
occlusion, which allows the GPU to render non-overlapping geometry in
parallel.

### Performance

Performance is slightly better than on `main` even though this new
approach is more correct and we're maintaining an extra data structure
(the AABB tree).

Dzmitry MalyshauandMikayla 9ad1862f2f Enable Blade on MacOS via "macos-blade" feature (#7669)
Depends on https://github.com/zed-industries/font-kit/pull/2 and
https://github.com/kvark/blade/pull/77

This change enables Blade to be also used on MacOS. It will also make it
easier to use it on Windows.

What works: most of the things. Zed loads as fast and appears equally
responsive to the current renderer.
<img width="306" alt="Screenshot 2024-02-11 at 12 09 15 AM"
src="https://github.com/zed-industries/zed/assets/107301/66d82f45-5ea2-4e2b-86c6-5b3ed333c827">

Things missing:
- [x] video streaming. ~~Requires a bit of plumbing on both Blade and
Zed sides, but all fairly straightforward.~~
  - verified with a local setup
- [x] resize. ~~Not sure where exactly to hook up the reaction on the
window size change. Once we know where, the fix is one line.~~
- [ ] fine-tune CA Layer
- this isn't a blocker for merging the PR, but it would be a blocker if
we wanted to switch to the new path by default
- [ ] rebase on latest, get the dependency merged (need review/merge of
https://github.com/zed-industries/font-kit/pull/2!)

Update: I implemented resize support as well as "surface" rendering on
the Blade path (which will be useful on Linux/Windows later on). I
haven't tested the latter though - not sure how to get something
streaming. Would appreciate some help! I don't think this should be a
blocker to this PR, anyway.

The only little piece that's missing for the Blade on MacOS path to be
full-featured is fine-tuning the CALayer configuration. Zed does a lot
of careful logic in configuring the layer, such as switching the
"present with transaction" on/off intermittently, which Blade path
doesn't have yet.
