Piotr Osiewicz bd6d385817 gpui: Pass Style by value to request_layout (#11597)
A minor thing I've spotted and decided to fix on the spot.
It was being cloned twice within the body of that function (one of which
was redundant even without this PR); now in most cases we go down from 2
clones to 0.

5df1481297 Introduce a new markdown crate (#11556)
This pull request introduces a new `markdown` crate which is capable of
parsing and rendering a Markdown source. One of the key additions is
that it enables text selection within a `Markdown` view. Eventually,
this will replace `RichText` but for now the goal is to use it in the
assistant revamped assistant in the spirit of making progress.

src="https://github.com/zed-industries/zed/assets/482957/b56c777b-e57c-42f9-95c1-3ada22f63a69">

Note that this pull request doesn't yet use the new markdown renderer in
`assistant2`. This is because we need to modify the assistant before
slotting in the new renderer and I wanted to merge this independently of
those changes.

Nathan SoboandAntonio Scandurra 39fb1d567d Incorporate ElementId as part of the Element::id trait method and expose GlobalId (#11101)
We're planning to associate "selection sources" with global element ids
to allow arbitrary UI text to be selected in GPUI. Previously, global
ids were not exposed outside the framework and we entangled management
of the element id stack with element state access. This was more
acceptable when element state was the only place we used global element
ids, but now that we're planning to use them more places, it makes sense
to deal with element identity as a first-class part of the element
system. We now ensure that the stack of element ids which forms the
current global element id is correctly managed in every phase of element
layout and paint and make the global id available to each element
method. In a subsequent PR, we'll use the global element id as part of
implementing arbitrary selection for UI text.

Antonio ScandurraandNathan Sobo 6a7761e620 Merge ElementContext into WindowContext (#10979)
The new `ElementContext` was originally introduced to ensure the element
APIs could only be used inside of elements. Unfortunately, there were
many places where some of those APIs needed to be used, so
`WindowContext::with_element_context` was introduced, which defeated the
original safety purposes of having a specific context for elements.

This pull request merges `ElementContext` into `WindowContext` and adds
(debug) runtime checks to APIs that can only be used during certain
phases of element drawing.

Antonio ScandurraandNathan bcbf2f2fd3 Introduce autoscroll support for elements (#10889)
This pull request introduces the new
`ElementContext::request_autoscroll(bounds)` and
`ElementContext::take_autoscroll()` methods in GPUI. These new APIs
enable container elements such as `List` to change their scroll position
if one of their children requested an autoscroll. We plan to use this in
the revamped assistant.

As a drive-by, we also:

- Renamed `Element::before_layout` to `Element::request_layout`
- Renamed `Element::after_layout` to `Element::prepaint`
- Introduced a new `List::splice_focusable` method to splice focusable
elements into the list, which enables rendering offscreen elements that
are focused.

While working towards fixes for the image viewer, @mikayla-maki and I
discovered that we didn't have `object-fit: scale-down` implemented.

only the bounds width is updating on layout change that I haven't fully

Max Brunsfeld 46544d7354 Revert PR #8327 - Fix autocomplete completions being cut in half (#10084)
This reverts https://github.com/zed-industries/zed/pull/8327

That PR introduced a regression where completions' syntax highlighting
would be corrupted in a non-deterministic way, such that it varied from
frame to frame:

In the screenshot below, many of the field names (e.g. `cursor`,
`depth`) are incorrectly colored as types instead of fields. The
`finished_states` field has highlighting that changes at the wrong
offset. All of these values changed from frame to frame, creating a
strange flickering effect:

Thorsten Ball ad03a7e72c Remove tooltips on scroll wheel events (#10069)
This fixes #9928 by invalidating the tooltip on mouse scroll.

I think _ideally_ we'd have a solution that only invalidates it if,
after mouse scroll, we're not hovering over the element. But I tried
that (by essentially duplicating the code for `MouseMoveEvent` but that
lead to some inconsistencies. I think we don't redraw when we finish
scrolling.

This now behaves exactly like tooltips in Chrome: invalidate on scroll,
move mouse again to trigger the tooltip.

It also behaves like the hover tooltips in the editor.

([#8126](https://github.com/zed-industries/zed/issues/8126)).

Previously, autocomplete suggestions were covered by autocomplete

Now, when an autocomplete suggestion is too long to fit, the name is
truncated with ellipses like how VSCode does it:

default was changed from 300ms to 0ms, which makes the editor feel
significantly faster (in my opinion).

Bennet Bo Fenner ce57db497e chat panel: Fix tooltips not working for links (#9691)
Closes #9418

Noticed a difference in the `cx.set_tooltip(...)` calls between `div`

`after_layout`, but `InteractiveText` was calling this inside `paint`. I
believe as #9012 was merged, we need to call `cx.set_tooltip` inside
`after_layout`, as inserting inside `paint` does not seem to be
supported anymore.

I moved the code for setting the tooltip to `after_layout` and hovering
over links inside the chat seems to bring up the tooltips again.

### Problem

After transitioning Zed to GPUI 2, we started noticing that interacting
with the mouse on many UI elements would lead to a pretty annoying
flicker. The main issue with the old approach was that hover state was
calculated based on the previous frame. That is, when computing whether
a given element was hovered in the current frame, we would use
information about the same element in the previous frame.

However, inspecting the previous frame tells us very little about what
should be hovered in the current frame, as elements in the current frame
may have changed significantly.

### Solution

This pull request's main contribution is the introduction of a new
`after_layout` phase when redrawing the window. The key idea is that
we'll give every element a chance to register a hitbox (see
`ElementContext::insert_hitbox`) before painting anything. Then, during
the `paint` phase, elements can determine whether they're the topmost
and draw their hover state accordingly.

We are also removing the ability to give an arbitrary z-index to
elements. Instead, we will follow the much simpler painter's algorithm.
That is, an element that gets painted after will be drawn on top of an
element that got painted earlier. Elements can still escape their
current "stacking context" by using the new `ElementContext::defer_draw`
method (see `Overlay` for an example). Elements drawn using this method
will still be logically considered as being children of their original
parent (for keybinding, focus and cache invalidation purposes) but their
layout and paint passes will be deferred until the currently-drawn
element is done.

With these changes we also reworked geometry batching within the
`Scene`. The new approach uses an AABB tree to determine geometry
occlusion, which allows the GPU to render non-overlapping geometry in
parallel.

### Performance

Performance is slightly better than on `main` even though this new
approach is more correct and we're maintaining an extra data structure
(the AABB tree).

Mikayla Maki c0edb5bd6c GPUI custom window prompts (#8980)
This adds a GPUI fallback for window prompts. Linux does not support
this feature by default, so we have to implement it ourselves.

This implementation also makes it possible for GPUI clients to override
the platform prompts with their own implementations.

This is just a first pass. These alerts are not keyboard accessible yet,
does not reflect the prompt level, they're implemented in-window, rather
than as popups, and the whole feature need a pass from a designer.
Regardless, this gets us one step closer to Linux support :)

Andrew Lygin effc317a06 Fix project panel scrolling position restoration (#8961)
Project panel loses the last scrolling position every time the user
hides/shows it. This PR fixes the problem.

The reason of the problem is that `UniformListScrollHandle`, which is
intended to store the scrolling position between redrawings, is only
used for ad-hoc autoscrollings to the list items, while the
`interactivity.scroll_handle` that is responsible for the scrolling
position, doesn't survive the project panel hiding.

How the problem looks:

Antonio ScandurraandNathan 7aba9eb4b7 Introduce a short-term solution for flickering (#8542)
This uses bounds checking alone to determine hover state to avoid
flicker. It's a short-term solution because the rendering is incorrect.
We think this is better than flickering though and buys us some time as
we work on a more robust solution overall.

Release Notes:

- Fixed flickering when hovering.

Bennet Bo Fenner 934af6ad45 recent projects: fix list flashing/empty (#8376)
If the list is large (size > overdraw + available height) the
`all_rendered` check was preventing the list from returning an inferred
size. Theoretically we can now report heights which are actually too
small (because not all items were affected during layout), this can be
manually adjusted using the overdraw parameter. In this case its fine
because the picker is inside a max_height which should never be more
then the overdraw we specify (1000 px), and the list will shrink down
either way when the request_measured_layout callback is called again.

Release Notes:

- Fixed flashing of recent projects list when there were a lot of
projects in the list

As the ui for the file finder was recently changed in #7364, I think it
makes sense to also update the ui of the recent projects overlay.
