Smit Barmase d4110fd2ab linux: Fix spacebar not working with multiple keyboard layouts (#34514)
Closes #26468 #16667

This PR fixes the spacebar not working with multiple keyboard layouts on
Linux X11. I have tested this with Czech, Russian, German, German Neo 2,
etc. It seems to work correctly.

`XkbStateNotify` events correctly update XKB state with complete
modifier info (depressed/latched/locked), but `KeyPress/KeyRelease`
events immediately overwrite that state using `update_mask()` with only
raw X11 modifier bits. This breaks xkb state as we reset `latched_mods`
and `locked_mods` to 0, as well as we might not correctly handle cases
where this new xkb state needs to change.

Previous logic is flawed because `KeyPress/KeyRelease` event only gives
you depressed modifiers (`event.state`) and not others, which we try to
fill in from `previous_xkb_state`. This patch was introduced to fix
capitalization issue with Neo 2
(https://github.com/zed-industries/zed/pull/14466) and later to fix
wrong keys with German layout
(https://github.com/zed-industries/zed/pull/31193), both of which I have
tested this PR with.

Now, instead of manually managing XKB state, we use the `update_key`
method, which internally handles modifier states and other cases we
might have missed.

From `update_key` docs:

> Update the keyboard state to reflect a given key being pressed or
released.
>
> This entry point is intended for programs which track the keyboard
state explictly (like an evdev client). If the state is serialized to
you by a master process (like a Wayland compositor) using functions like
`xkb_state_serialize_mods()`, you should use `xkb_state_update_mask()`
instead. **_The two functins should not generally be used together._**
>
> A series of calls to this function should be consistent; that is, a
call with `xkb::KEY_DOWN` for a key should be matched by an
`xkb::KEY_UP`; if a key is pressed twice, it should be released twice;
etc. Otherwise (e.g. due to missed input events), situations like "stuck
modifiers" may occur.
>
> This function is often used in conjunction with the function
`xkb_state_key_get_syms()` (or `xkb_state_key_get_one_sym()`), for
example, when handling a key event. In this case, you should prefer to
get the keysyms *before* updating the key, such that the keysyms
reported for the key event are not affected by the event itself. This is
the conventional behavior.

Adds _key_en_ to _Keystroke_ that is derived from key's scan code. This
is more lightweight approach than #32529

Currently has been tested on x11 and windows. Mac code hasn't been
implemented yet.

Release Notes:

- linux: When typing non-ASCII keys on Linux we will now also match
keybindings against the QWERTY-equivalent layout. This should allow most
of Zed's builtin shortcuts to work out of the box on most keyboard
layouts. **Breaking change**: If you had been using `keysym` names in
your keyboard shortcut file (`ctrl-cyrillic_yeru`, etc.) you should now
use the QWERTY-equivalent characters instead.

Smit Barmase 153840199e linux: Use randr as fallback for scale factor in X11 (#34265)
Closes #14537

- Adds server-side scale factor detection via `randr` when client-side
detection fails using `xrdb/Xft.dpi`.
- Adds the `GPUI_X11_SCALE_FACTOR` flag to force a scale factor, which
can be a positive number for custom scaling or `randr` for server-side
scale factor detection.

Release Notes:

- Fixed an issue where the scale factor was not detected correctly on
X11 systems when `Xft.dpi` is not defined (mostly in cases involving
window managers).

Michael Sloan c95e2a2f1d linux: Add mouse cursor icon name synonyms (#32820)
Most of the default icon sets on Ubuntu do not use the names that were
there. To fix, using the icon synonyms from the chromium source. This
will probably fix some of the linux mouse cursor issues tracked in
#26141

Also adds a note in the load failure logs mentioning that misconfigured
`XCURSOR_PATH` may be the issue. I ran into this because [the alacritty
snap incorrectly sets
XCURSOR_PATH](https://github.com/snapcrafters/alacritty/issues/21).

On X11 also adds:

* Caching of load errors to log once for missing cursor icons.

* Fallback on default cursor icon. This way if there was a transition
from a non-default icon to a missing icon it doesn't get stuck showing
the non-default icon.

Leaving release notes blank as I have other mouse cursor fixes and would
prefer to just have one entry in the release notes.

Michael Sloan 6150c26bd2 X11: Fix handling of key remapping (#32780)
Closes #27384

I wrote #32771 before seeing #27384, and hoped that change would fix it.
It didn't because `XkbSelectNotify` wants a mask of which types of
`XkbMapNotify` to deliver, and otherwise won't send them.

I noticed quite a few events are sent just for remapping a single
keycode, so I updated the event loop to deduplicate these events (since
the handler does not attempt to apply them and instead just re-queries
keyboard info).

Also adds a missing call of `keyboard_layout_change` on `XkbMapNotify`
and `XkbNewKeyboardNotify`.

Michael Sloan 3bed5b767f x11: Halt periodic refresh for windows that aren't visible (#32775)
This adds handling of UnmapNotify / MapNotify / VisibilityNotify to
track whether windows are visible. When hidden, the refresh loop is
halted until visible again. Often these refreshes were just checking if
the window is dirty, but I believe it sometimes did a full re-render for
things that change without user interaction (cursor blink, animations).

This also changes handling of Expose events to set a flag indicating the
next refresh should have `require_presentation: true`.

Keyboard hot reloading was added in #15059, but also reloaded this on

events and was instead reloading when windows are mapped (typically when

Before the fix for reapply, it was iterating through the formats and
requesting conversion to each. Some clipboard providers just respond
with a different format rather than saying the format is unsupported.
The fix is to use this response if it matches a supported format. It
also now typically avoids this iteration by requesting the `TARGETS` and
taking the highest precedence supported target.

Kirill Bulatov 16366cf9f2 Use anyhow more idiomatically (#31052)
https://github.com/zed-industries/zed/issues/30972 brought up another
case where our context is not enough to track the actual source of the
issue: we get a general top-level error without inner error.

The reason for this was `.ok_or_else(|| anyhow!("failed to read HEAD
SHA"))?; ` on the top level.

The PR finally reworks the way we use anyhow to reduce such issues (or
at least make it simpler to bubble them up later in a fix).
On top of that, uses a few more anyhow methods for better readability.

* `.ok_or_else(|| anyhow!("..."))`, `map_err` and other similar error
conversion/option reporting cases are replaced with `context` and
`with_context` calls
* in addition to that, various `anyhow!("failed to do ...")` are
stripped with `.context("Doing ...")` messages instead to remove the
parasitic `failed to` text
* `anyhow::ensure!` is used instead of `if ... { return Err(...); }`
calls
* `anyhow::bail!` is used instead of `return Err(anyhow!(...));`

Closes:
https://github.com/zed-industries/zed/pull/29177#issuecomment-2823359242

Removes dependency on
[quininer/x11-clipboard](https://github.com/quininer/x11-clipboard) as
it is in [maintenance
mode](https://github.com/quininer/x11-clipboard/issues/19).

X11 clipboard functionality is now built-in to GPUI which was
accomplished by stripping the non-x11-related code/abstractions from
[1Password/arboard](https://github.com/1Password/arboard) and extending
it to support all image formats already supported by GPUI on wayland and

A benefit of switching over to the `arboard` implementation, is that we
now make an attempt to have an X11 "clipboard manager" (if available -

张小白 f0ef3110d3 gpui: Introduce PlatformKeyboardLayout trait for human-friendly keyboard layout names (#29049)
This PR adds a new `PlatformKeyboardLayout` trait with two methods:
`id(&self) -> &str` and `name(&self) -> &str`. The `id()` method returns
a unique identifier for the keyboard layout, while `name()` provides a
human-readable name. This distinction is especially important on
Windows, where the `id` and `name` can be quite different. For example,
the French layout has an `id` of `0000040C`, which is not
human-readable, whereas the `name` would simply be `French`. Currently,
the existing `keyboard_layout()` method returns what's essentially the
same as `id()` in this new design.

This PR implements the `name()` method for both Windows and macOS. On
Linux, for now, `name()` still returns the same value as `id()`.

Cole MillerandMax 9ef0501853 file_finder: Remove common segments of long paths in search results (#25049)
This PR makes progress on #7711 by identifying any common prefix of the
paths in the file finder's search results, and replacing the "interior"
of that prefix---every path segment but the first and last---with `...`,
when a heuristic indicates that the longest path would otherwise
overflow the modal.

The elision is not applied to any segment that contains a match for the
search query.

There may be more work to do on #7711 in the case of long result paths
that do not share a significant common prefix.

Mike Qin 9c3482083b Map window after set_app_id() under X11 (#23046)
GPUI applications can set the window class by the `app_id` window
option. However, GPUI will map the window first and then change the
window class after the window is displayed. This doesn't work on some
X11 window managers. FVWM, for example, does not track window class
after a window is mapped. Because in practice, a window shouldn't change
its application group on the fly.

This PR fixed this by adding a `map_window()` function `PlatformWindow`.
On X11, it will `set_app_id()` first and then map the window.

6fca1d2b0b Eliminate GPUI View, ViewContext, and WindowContext types (#22632)
There's still a bit more work to do on this, but this PR is compiling
(with warnings) after eliminating the key types. When the tasks below
are complete, this will be the new narrative for GPUI:

- `Entity<T>` - This replaces `View<T>`/`Model<T>`. It represents a unit
of state, and if `T` implements `Render`, then `Entity<T>` implements
`Element`.
- `&mut App` This replaces `AppContext` and represents the app.
- `&mut Context<T>` This replaces `ModelContext` and derefs to `App`. It
is provided by the framework when updating an entity.
- `&mut Window` Broken out of `&mut WindowContext` which no longer
exists. Every method that once took `&mut WindowContext` now takes `&mut
Window, &mut App` and every method that took `&mut ViewContext<T>` now
takes `&mut Window, &mut Context<T>`

Not pictured here are the two other failed attempts. It's been quite a
month!

Tasks:

- [x] Remove `View`, `ViewContext`, `WindowContext` and thread through
`Window`
- [x] [@cole-miller @mikayla-maki] Redraw window when entities change
- [x] [@cole-miller @mikayla-maki] Get examples and Zed running
- [x] [@cole-miller @mikayla-maki] Fix Zed rendering
- [x] [@mikayla-maki] Fix todo! macros and comments
- [x] Fix a bug where the editor would not be redrawn because of view
caching
- [x] remove publicness window.notify() and replace with
`AppContext::notify`
- [x] remove `observe_new_window_models`, replace with
`observe_new_models` with an optional window
- [x] Fix a bug where the project panel would not be redrawn because of
the wrong refresh() call being used
- [x] Fix the tests
- [x] Fix warnings by eliminating `Window` params or using `_`
- [x] Fix conflicts
- [x] Simplify generic code where possible
- [x] Rename types
- [ ] Update docs

tims d2d1779e0d linux: Add keyboard_layout and on_keyboard_layout_change support (#22736)
No issue, as the functionality is currently not being used in Zed. This
is more of a GPUI improvement.

Currently, `keyboard_layout` and `on_keyboard_layout_change` are already
handled on macOS. This PR implements the same for X11 and Wayland.

Linux supports up to 4 keyboard layout groups (e.g., Group 0: English
US, Group 1: Bulgarian, etc). On X11 and Wayland, `event` provides a new
active group, which maps to the `layout_index`. We already store keymap
state from where we can get the current `layout_index`. By comparing
them, we determine if the layout has changed.

tims b46b261f11 linux: Fix process PID to window mapping for X11 (#22348)
Closes #22326

This PR adds process PID information to window created by X11, so that
window manager can identify which process this window belongs to.
Without this property, the window manager would have no reliable way to
know which process created this window.

In original issue, `robotgo` throws error on `x, y, w, h :=
robotgo.GetBounds(pid)` this method. If we go deeper into the source
code of `robotgo`, it calls `GetXidFromPid` which goes through all
windows, and tries to check for provided pid. Hence, when it tries to do
that for Zed, it fails and returns `0, err` to caller.

```go
// Robotgo source code trying to look through all windows and query pid
// GetXidFromPid get the xid from pid
func GetXidFromPid(xu *xgbutil.XUtil, pid int) (xproto.Window, error) {
	windows, err := ewmh.ClientListGet(xu)
	if err != nil {
		return 0, err
	}
	for _, window := range windows {
		wmPid, err := ewmh.WmPidGet(xu, window)
		if err != nil {
			return 0, err
		}
		if uint(pid) == wmPid {
			return window, nil
		}
	}
	return 0, errors.New("failed to find a window with a matching pid.")
}
```

Querying for pid for active Zed window:

Before:
```sh
tims@lemon ~/w/go-repro [127]> xprop -root _NET_ACTIVE_WINDOW
_NET_ACTIVE_WINDOW(WINDOW): window id # 0x4e00002
tims@lemon ~/w/go-repro> xprop -id 0x4e00002 _NET_WM_PID
_NET_WM_PID:  not found.
```

After:
```sh
tims@lemon ~/w/go-repro> xprop -root _NET_ACTIVE_WINDOW
_NET_ACTIVE_WINDOW(WINDOW): window id # 0x4e00002
tims@lemon ~/w/go-repro> xprop -id 0x4e00002 _NET_WM_PID
_NET_WM_PID(CARDINAL) = 103548
tims@lemon ~/w/go-repro>
```

Correct zed process PID (below) assosiated with zed window (shown
above):

timsandmgsloan@gmail.com <michael@zed.dev> ca9cee85e1 linux: Fix non-maximized Zed windows growing larger across sessions (#22301)
Closes #17870

Context:

On Linux, when creating a new window, bounds are either pulled from
existing workspace data (serialized in an SQLite DB) or fall back to
some default constants if no data exists.

These bounds include the full dimensions of the window (width and
height), which already account for insets. However, properties like
`inset` (Wayland) or `last_insets` (X11) exist only at the platform
level and are not part of the window bounds themselves.

During rendering, we call `set_client_inset`, which updates the inset
values and also adjusts the window bounds, increasing their dimensions.
In Zed's case, the inset is 10px, which adds 20px to both the width and
height (10px from each side).

Problem:

When quitting, the full window bounds (which already account for inset)
are saved to the DB. On reopening, these saved bounds are used to create
the window. `set_client_inset` runs again and inflates the dimensions
even more.

Solution:

Store window bounds *without* the inset-inflated dimensions. On the next
session, `set_client_inset` will take care of applying the inset,
resulting window dimensions matching the previous session. This fix is
in the PR.

Alternative Solution:

Another option is to save the inset explicitly in the DB and apply it
during window creation. But this means storing more data, and the inset
would need to be platform-agnostic, which adds complexity. Doesn’t seem
worth it for no real gain.

X11 Before:
```sh
saving window bounds with width: 1136, height: 784
tims@lemon ~/w/zed (fix-window-growing-larger)> cargo run
    Finished `dev` profile [unoptimized + debuginfo] target(s) in 0.37s
     Running `target/debug/zed`
```sh
    Finished `dev` profile [unoptimized + debuginfo] target(s) in 0.35s
     Running `target/debug/zed`
saving window bounds with width: 1116, height: 764

    Finished `dev` profile [unoptimized + debuginfo] target(s) in 0.35s

     Running `target/debug/zed`
saving window bounds with width: 1116, height: 764 <---- same
```
On Wayland, saving occurs only when you actually resize the window (on
X11, saving happens both on init and while dragging the window). To
trigger saving, I manually resized the window by ~1px to make it print.
```sh

298b9df589 Switch to a single GPU context in Blade (#20853)
Closes #17005

Release Notes:

- Improved GPU context management: share a single context with multiple
surfaces.

### High Level

Blade got a proper support for Surface objects in
https://github.com/kvark/blade/pull/203.
That was mainly motivated by Zed needing to draw multiple windows. With
the Surface API, Zed is now able to have the GPU context tied to the
"Platform" instead of "Window". Practically speaking, this means:
  - architecture more sound
  - faster to open/close windows
  - less surprises, more robust

### Concerns

1. Zed has been using a temporary workaround for the platform bug on
some Intel+Nvidia machines that makes us unable to present -
https://github.com/kvark/blade/pull/144 . This workaround is no longer
available with the new architecture. I'm looking for ideas on how to
approach this better.
- we are now picking up the change in
https://github.com/kvark/blade/pull/210, which allows forcing a specific
Device ID. This should allow Zed users to work around the issue. We
could help them to automate it, too.
2. ~~Metal-rs dependency is switched to
https://github.com/kvark/metal-rs/tree/blade, since upstream isn't
responsive in merging changes that are required for Blade. Hopefully,
temporary.~~
- ~~we can also hack around it by just transmuting the texture
references, since we know those are unchanged in the branch. That would
allow Blade to use it's own version of Metal, temporarily, if switching
metal-rs in the workspace is a concern.~~
- merged my metal-rs changes and updated Zed to use the upstream github
