Andrew FarkasandCole Miller 0a6cb6117b Fix connect.host setting being ignored by debugpy (#43190)
Closes #42727

Unfortunately we can only support IPv4 addresses right now because
`TcpArguments` only supports an IPv4 address. I'm not sure how difficult
it would be to lift this limitation.

Anthony EidandRemco Smits 07dcb8f2bb debugger: Add program and module path fallbacks for debugpy toolchain (#40975)
Fixes the Debugpy toolchain detection bug in #40324

When detecting what toolchain (venv) to use in the Debugpy configuration
stage, we used to only base it off of the current working directory
argument passed to the config. This is wrong behavior for cases like
mono repos, where the correct virtual environment to use is nested in
another folder.

This PR fixes this issue by adding the program and module fields as
fallbacks to check for virtual environments. We also added support for
program/module relative paths as well when cwd is not None.

Release Notes:

- debugger: Improve mono repo virtual environment detection with Debugpy

Anthony Eid ecbdffc84f debugger: Fix Debugpy attach with connect session startup (#41690)
Closes #38345, #34882, #33280

Debugpy has four distinct configuration scenarios, which are:
1. launch
2. attach with process id
3. attach with listen
4. attach with connect

Spawning Debugpy directly works with the first three scenarios but not
with "attach with connect". Which requires host/port arguments being
passed in both with an attach request and when starting up Debugpy. This
PR passes in the right arguments when spawning Debugpy in an attach with
connect scenario, thus fixing the bug.

The VsCode extension comment that explains this:

Cole Miller 6a1648825c windows: Detect when python3 is not usable and notify the user (#40070)
Fixes #39998

Debugpy and pylsp are installed in a Zed-global venv with pip. We need a
Python interpreter to create this venv when it doesn't exist and one of
these tools needs to be installed, and sometimes we attempt to use
`python3` from `$PATH`. This can cause issues on Windows, where out of
the box `python3` is a sort of shim that opens the Microsoft Store app.

This PR changes the debugpy installation path to create the Zed-global
venv using the Python interpreter from a venv in the project, and only
use python3 from `$PATH` if that fails. That matches how pylsp
installation already works. It also tightens up how we search for a
global Python installation by doing a basic sanity check (`python3 -c
'print(1 + 2)`) before accepting it, which should catch the Windows
shim.

Release Notes:

- windows: improved the behavior of Zed in situations where no global
Python installation exists.

03f9cf4414 Represent relative paths using a dedicated, separator-agnostic type (#38744)
Closes https://github.com/zed-industries/zed/issues/38690
Closes #37353

### Background

On Windows, paths are normally separated by `\`, unlike mac and linux
where they are separated by `/`. When editing code in a project that
uses a different path style than your local system (e.g. remoting from
Windows to Linux, using WSL, and collaboration between windows and unix
users), the correct separator for a path may differ from the "native"
separator.

Previously, to work around this, Zed converted paths' separators in
numerous places. This was applied to both absolute and relative paths,
leading to incorrect conversions in some cases.

### Solution

Many code paths in Zed use paths that are *relative* to either a
worktree root or a git repository. This PR introduces a dedicated type
for these paths called `RelPath`, which stores the path in the same way
regardless of host platform, and offers `Path`-like manipulation APIs.
RelPath supports *displaying* the path using either separator, so that
we can display paths in a style that is determined at runtime based on
the current project.

The representation of absolute paths is left untouched, for now.
Absolute paths are different from relative paths because (except in
contexts where we know that the path refers to the local filesystem)
they should generally be treated as opaque strings. Currently we use a
mix of types for these paths (std::path::Path, String, SanitizedPath).

Anthony Eid 73b38c8306 debugger: Add ability to only show stack frame entries from visible work trees (#37061)
This PR adds a toggleable filter to the stack frame list that filters
out entries that don't exist within a user's project (visible work
trees). This works by keeping a vector of entry indices that exist
within a user's project and updates the list state based on these
entries when filtering the list.

I went with this approach so the stack frame list wouldn't have to
rebuild itself whenever the filter is toggled and it could persist its
state across toggles (uncollapsing a collapse list). It was also easier
to keep track of selected entries on toggle using the vector as well.

Cole MillerandRemco Smits 0a3ef40c2f debugger: Interpret user-specified debug adapter binary paths in a more intuitive way for JS and Python (#33926)
Previously we would append `js-debug/src/dapDebugServer.js` to the value

intuitive for the `JavaScript` and `Debugpy` adapters. In the new
semantics, this should be the path to `dapDebugServer.js` for

`Debugpy`.

Cole Miller c9bd409732 debugger: Support passing custom arguments to debug adapters (#33251)

Piotr Osiewicz a305eda8d1 debugger: Relax implementation of validate_config to not run validation (#31785)
When we moved to schema-based debug configs, we've added validate_config
- a trait method
that is supposed to both validate the configuration and determine
whether it is a launch configuration
or an attach configuration.

The validation bit is a bit problematic though - we received reports on
Discords about
scenarios not starting up properly; it turned out that Javascript's
implementation was overly strict.
Thus, I got rid of any code that tries to validate the config - let's
let the debug adapter itself
decide whether it can digest the configuration or not. validate_config
is now left unimplemented for most
DebugAdapter implementations (except for PHP), because all adapters use
`request`: 'launch'/'attach' for that.
Let's leave the trait method in place though, as nothing guarantees this
to be true for all adapters.

Raphael Lüthy 05763b2fe3 debugger beta: Fix install detection for Debugpy in venv (#31339)
Based on my report on discord when chatting with Anthony and Remco:
https://discord.com/channels/869392257814519848/1375129714645012530

Root Cause: Zed was incorrectly trying to execute a directory path
instead of properly invoking the debugpy module when debugpy was
installed via package managers (pip, conda, etc.) rather than downloaded
from GitHub releases.

Solution:

- Automatic Detection: Zed now automatically detects whether debugpy is
installed via pip/conda or downloaded from GitHub
- Correct Invocation: For pip-installed debugpy, Zed now uses python -m
debugpy.adapter instead of trying to execute file paths
- Added a `installed_in_venv` flag to differentiate the setup properly
- Backward Compatibility: GitHub-downloaded debugpy releases continue to
work as before
- Enhanced Logging: Added logging to show which debugpy installation
method is being used (I had to verify it somehow)

I verified with the following setups (can be confirmed with the debug
logs):
- `conda` with installed debugpy, went to installed instance
- `uv` with installed debugpy, went to installed instance
- `uv` without installed debugpy, went to github releases
- Homebrew global python install, went to github releases

1c9b818342 debugger: Use DAP schema to configure daps (#30833)
This PR allows DAPs to define their own schema so users can see
completion items when editing their debug.json files.

Users facing this aren’t the biggest chance, but behind the scenes, this
affected a lot of code because we manually translated common fields from
Zed's config format to be adapter-specific. Now we store the raw JSON
from a user's configuration file and just send that.

I'm ignoring the Protobuf CICD error because the DebugTaskDefinition
message is not yet user facing and we need to deprecate some fields in
it.

Release Notes:

- debugger beta: Show completion items when editing debug.json
- debugger beta: Breaking change, debug.json schema now relays on what
DAP you have selected instead of always having the same based values.

Kirill Bulatov 16366cf9f2 Use anyhow more idiomatically (#31052)
https://github.com/zed-industries/zed/issues/30972 brought up another
case where our context is not enough to track the actual source of the
issue: we get a general top-level error without inner error.

The reason for this was `.ok_or_else(|| anyhow!("failed to read HEAD
SHA"))?; ` on the top level.

The PR finally reworks the way we use anyhow to reduce such issues (or
at least make it simpler to bubble them up later in a fix).
On top of that, uses a few more anyhow methods for better readability.

* `.ok_or_else(|| anyhow!("..."))`, `map_err` and other similar error
conversion/option reporting cases are replaced with `context` and
`with_context` calls
* in addition to that, various `anyhow!("failed to do ...")` are
stripped with `.context("Doing ...")` messages instead to remove the
parasitic `failed to` text
* `anyhow::ensure!` is used instead of `if ... { return Err(...); }`
calls
* `anyhow::bail!` is used instead of `return Err(anyhow!(...));`

1a520990cc debugger: Add inline value tests (#29815)
## Context

This PR improves the accuracy of our inline values for Rust/Python. It
does this by only adding inline value hints to the last valid use of a
variable and checking whether variables are valid within a given scope
or not.

We also added tests for Rust/Python inline values and inline values
refreshing when stepping in a debug session.

### Future tasks
1. Handle functions that have inner functions defined within them.
2. Add inline values to variables that were used in inner scopes but not
defined in them.
3. Move the inline value provider trait and impls to the language trait
(or somewhere else).
4. Use Semantic tokens as the first inline value provider and fall back
to tree sitter
5. add let some variable statement, for loops, and function inline value
hints to Rust.
6. Make writing tests more streamlined.
6.1 We should be able to write a test by only passing in variables,
language, source file, expected result, and stop position to a function.
7. Write a test that has coverage for selecting different stack frames.

218496744c debugger: Add support for inline value hints (#28656)
This PR uses Tree Sitter to show inline values while a user is in a
debug session.

We went with Tree Sitter over the LSP Inline Values request because the
LSP request isn't widely supported. Tree Sitter is easy for
languages/extensions to add support to. Tree Sitter can compute the
inline values locally, so there's no need to add extra RPC messages for
Collab. Tree Sitter also gives Zed more control over how we want to show
variables.

There's still more work to be done after this PR, namely differentiating
between global/local scoped variables, but it's a great starting point
to start iteratively improving it.

aef78dcffd Tidy up DAP initialization (#28730)
To make DAP work over SSH we want to create the binary
at the project level (so we can wrap it in an `ssh` invocation
transparently).

This means not pushing the adapter down into the session, and resolving
more information ahead-of-time.

Anthony Eid 0ba8432b0b Debugger: Add stop on entry support to debug adapter configs (#27942)
This PR adds passing in `stop_on_entry` to debug configs in debug.json
instead of going through initialization args.

This has two benefits:

1. It's more streamlined to a user since every internal adapter supports
`stop_on_entry` for launch requests and Go's adapter supports it for
attach requests too.
2. It will allow @osiewicz `NewSesssionModal` PR to use this field for
the stop on entry checkbox.
